Which Camera please ?

Hi everyone :wave:

Could someone or some of you point me in the right direction of choosing a camera please ?

I distantly remember that the cameras to have are SLR's and D-SLR's ?

I have a budget of £500 - £1000 new or used.

I have a very basic understanding about photography. I think I might have an eye for it, only time will tell. I am a quick learner though and pick things up quite easily.

Is there a good beginners guide to photography, like a bible so-to-speak, or do I just use the forums resources ?

My main passion is cars, I love seeing pictures of cars that have been taken with those excellent camera's.

Could I have some suggestions please ;)

Before you buy go into a shop and handle a few. It helps if you like the feel of a camera.
 
I think that the learning curve / expense with a film camera is pretty steep. The nature of digital allows you to take lots of pictures trying different techniques examine the results & decide what type of results you like. Broadly speaking all SLRs/DSLRs are more versatile than the other choices. I don't believe you need to spend your top budget to get what you need initially. Play with a few in the shops, see what you like & maybe down the line you'll want to invest in a lens or two.
 
What makes the Canon 40d a good choice over other cameras then, out of interest ?

Id just hate to buy one particular camera and later find out I should have bought something else :(

Ideally, browsing through the forum, I should try and get a package, rather than just a camera ?

What do people suggest ?

D90 is classed as an amazing low light camera, well within your budget. You could pick a 2nd hand one up for £500.

And then you have some money to spend on decent glass. Glass is more important than the camera. I would reccomend the 50mm 1.8 right off the bat, which is good if you can get close up to those cars.
I also use a Tamron 75-300 f/4-5.6 which, I'll be honest... Isn't brilliant in low light, but if your taking photos of cars it would be fine.
Plus paired with the D90 with its good noise capability...

The lens cost about £100-150 and on the D90 it would equate to a maximum of 450mm because its a DX crop sensor. (On DX cameras you X the lens length by 1.5) Basically a DX camera would get you 1.5 times closer than a full frame camera would (FX)
DX cameras are also cheaper and used alot more for sports photography.

I would also suggest saving up for some good pro end glass. Right now your miles off from affording any but if you want the better shots you pay the price.
A Nikon 70-200 2.8 will set you back £1600 ish, and if you need, a 2X teleconverter will be around 2-300

On the D90 the 70-200 equates to 105-300 and if you add the 2X tele converter it equates to 210-600mm which is fairly good for sports photography.

Any more info let me know.

Then go to a shop and handle a few to see which feels best.

Then come here, let us know which ones you liked and we can help you as much as possible :)

Adam, thank you for the indepth reply. My common sense will only get me so far as most of the stuff you've so kindly said I dont understand !

So far, I think I need a camera with a lens and everything else in a package.

Which would be a good all-rounder lens I would need ?

Micloi - I know that user name from some other forum, a car one ! Maybe your the same guy ?

If I went into a shop, I could pick several up in my price range and still wouldnt know which is best for me :|
