Which camera phone for street?

What I actually need is a project. As currently my inspiration comes from playing with new gadgets.

Why not setup a gadget reviewingYouTube vlogging channel :D

I wouldn't mind giving a phone a go for street photography - not sure how long the idea will last but I'm tempted by the Pixel 2 XL.

Should there be some other phone I consider? the camera needs to be on par with the pixel 2 XL, I guess iPhone X is an obvious candidate.

But I'd appreciate real world feedback from photographers too.
sony a9 with a 35 2.8!!!

sold the 35mm 2.8 - if i'm going to use the A9 rather use a decent lens on it.

Yet you’re talking about spending £700 on a phone with a tiny sensor?

You own the bulk of the Sony FE catalogue so one of your lenses must be good enough for you [emoji23]

You’ve started considering dipping your toe into film. Why not get a medium format TLR (like Vivian Meyer) and push yourself to learn something new instead of just another gadget?

It was tongue in cheek :) but since I was using the A9 i didn't care much for the size of the lens on it.

they all seems like gadgets to me.. I borrowed a medium format camera, took me about 2 years to get the film developed :D

Besides I'm tidying the house, not even thinking about how to spend money..

Another vote for the Huawei P20 Pro
I pre-order it and I have it since its release.
I am very happy and posted a few photos in the other thread about the phone here on the forum.
Will update with more photos as soon as I have some time.
I got mine with a contract with a very good offer and I don't regret a bit.
Many people say that it will not replace a RX100, A7 etc and they are right.
Many people say it is too much money for a phone, but it has lots of advantages: to have it in your pocket, not draw any attention, be able to publish and upload a min later, etc.

Personally speaking I have a Sony XZ Premium and the quality of the camera appears to be really good in outdoor environments.
Couple that with Manual controls and the ability to change the metering mode allows for more than just point and shoot control.

I've got this phone also and the burst shot has been invaluable with eliminating people blinking, unwanted objects etc. Some really good slow motion features also with the video and the 3D creator is pretty amazing!

Also, it's waterproof which can be handy for using outside.

I used to own a Panasonic DMC-CM1 which is by far the best camera phone. Comes with a 1" sensor and a 28mm f2.8 lens

I have a LG G4 which is quite old now but the camera is excellent, it shoots RAW and does 4K video. Anyway, after reading this thread I thought I would give it a quick try on my way out of work and have to say it's by far the easiest way of doing street as you basically hold the camera down by your side and press the rear shutter button. Gives nothing away at all.

I've had various iPhones from the original all the way up to the iPhone X, can't say the camera is particularly 'special' on the latter - any more than on the iPhone 6 etc, all of which are good enough.

Doesn't the X have a proper Tele lens? Id say thats quite a bit different to the IP6.

I think the Galaxy S9 has one of the brightest lenses at f/1.5, and you can switch it to f/2.8. Since most decent phones are good in daylight, I would look to what's best for low light. Even my cheap Chinese Xaomi takes reasonable/usable images during the day .... at night it's a bit of a mess.

Camera always beats a phone now only just

It's not just a question of image quality. I often want to take a photo just as a quick way of making a note, such as something in a shop window to check out later. I often carry a camera with me when I go out, but I thought the phone would be quicker and easier for quick snaps if the camera was bagged up. After a lot of practisiing taking photos with the phone I gave up. I find it so much quicker and easier to take a notebook snapshot with a camera than with a phone. The phone is just so awkward to hold, and I find it harder to frame the shot looking at the screen compared to looking through a viewfinder. The phone is so light I have trouble holding it steady, and pressing the "shutter button" often knocks the framing off and I have to try again. Now the only time I'll use the phone for a photograph is if I don't actually have a camera with me, even if I have to get it out of the bag first.

I'd probably find it pretty annoying trying to make phone calls with my camera too, supposing it was able to do that.

:) yes.. driving to currys.. I had to think it was a case of 'have money will spend' - which is why I came home again. i've got to 'come down' now :)

How about putting money aside for the future?

Not that I'm financial minded as I'm not but when I was working in the computer industry I earned money working very long hours and simply didn't have time to spend it so it just sat in the bank and one day I decided I'd had enough of living to work and took a step back and later decided even that was too much and retired at the relatively early age of 49 and since then I've never been happier, I've travelled the world, met ladies :D and married :D

I can't recommend not working for a living highly enough :D
