Which company do you recommend, and have you made any claims with them ok?

I`m looking to insure my kit prob about £2000 worth.

Would like some recommendations on what companies to try.
Thank You:)

Are you working professionally? If so have you considered the need for public liability cover? If just for domestic and pleasure use - why not speak to your current home insurance for an uprated cover on specific items?

If pro - take a look at:

aaduki - through Photomart:

http://www.photomartinsurance.co.uk/

£3k kit and £2m public liability for £140.

Just taken out a policy with aaduki - significantly cheaper than my last policy and they were happy to modifiy the policy wording to get me the cover i needed. Never had to claim but never heard anything bad about them.

We have it insured under our house insurance. Marks and Spencers were the best for covering high value stuff as standard, i think the normal cover per item is four grand.

Markies insurance was through Aviva, it has now changed, I quizzed them about the limits and if pro camera equipment was covered and the answer was No. The limit were good but did not cover pro equipment, they refer to the manufactures description to decide if it's pro gear.

They certainly don't cover you if you are selling pics or have them for sale.

Hiscox home contents cover will also do i woud imagine, unless they think you are runnng a business from home with your equipment.

+1 for aaduki (I am not pro, just liked the fact the kit is covered when its in the car)

Without being too cheeky but around what price do you (or anyone else) pay for the insurance? The more kit I buy the more I think I should get it insured but I can't tell whether it's worth it for me as a simple amatuer with little kit compared to a pro.

i've claimed with them, and i would recommend severing your own fingers before i recommend photoguard.

that bad eh? any chance you can explain? i'm with photoguard.

i decided to go with photoguard in the end, managed to insure £2500 of gear for £6.50 a month, cant complain at that, be silly not to insure it.
Plus i managed to insure a couple of lenses i dont have proof of purchase, just need to supply pics of items with boxes and manuals, serials etc etc.

Phil - I am with Aviva (formerly Norwich Union) and they have my gear covered under my house contents. Only items over £2000 in individual value need to be specified, otherwise they're already covered. merv:thumbs:

I think Gary may well be spot on here. Insurance is a black art and a cheap premium can spell disaster. If you choose the wrong company you are just wasting your money.

You should judge insurance companies on how they behave when you claim rather than by how much premium they might charge.

In fact, I'll insure all your gear for £100 a year if you'll accept the right terms!

Well said! this is why i'm slightly concerned when people start mentioning bad experiences with photoguard!

I use AUA, about £65 to cover £1,800, and will make multiple changes to the policy throughout the year without admin fees, and are pretty helpful too.

I am currently also looking for new insurance, I used to be with Photoguard, had one claim for scratched glass on a Canon 28-135mm as well as the hot shoe on a 400D, both were repaired quickly and pretty painlessly, they posted me packaging to send the camera and lens in and if I remember correctly I had it all back about a week later.

The only problem I had was with the rental cover for a stand in camera, worked out not worth it, should of read the small print better.
