Considering travelling again, mainly Australia and New Zealand. I have a D300 and a D40. which one do you suggest taking? Scared my D300 would get damaged but is it worth the risk for the better quality?

If it was me, I'd make the effort to take the D300. I spent 2 months in NZ last year visiting my brother and there are times when I wish I'd had something more substantial/capable than a D40x.

It's a good little camera, but I missed a few shots because of poor ISO performance, limited focal points and the tiny screen. When I go back out, I'm taking a FF with me :)

Depends what sort of travelling, white water rafting, and climbing mountains is different to a couriered coach tour. When you consider the cost of perhaps having to return to shoot on a better camera as opposed to to cost of it, that might put it into perspective, cameras can be replaced opportunities can't always.

I'm going on a trip to the WW1 trenches and that's by coach, but will probably take my old 350D, more for convenience and it will probably be sufficient for what I want, rather than the heavier 7D

I've owned both and would take the D300 without question. I appreciate that it would be good to have something as small and lightweight as the D40 at times, but other than the huge differences in quality, the biggest advantage(s) of the D300 for me would be it's weather and dust tightness and general impermeability and durability. The dust which regularly got into my D40 drove me mad. And apart from anything else, if you're going all that way, to places as photogenic as Oz and NZ, why take the second best camera?

No point in owning a decent camera if you're not going to use it. It's what travel insurance is for.

Took the words right out of my mouth. It's made to be used, you bought it so you could use it, logic follows - use it. :)

Get it covered on your travel insurance, and if you're staying in a backpackers sleep with it attached to you. :D

May as well take the best camera that will be up for the travel

well the D40 is lighter and i'm not sure i'll be coming back this time. was also going to get rid of 1 to help fund my trip and obviously the d300 will fetch more than the d40. but i know i'm gonna be in a situation when i 'll wish i had the d300.
