Hi,
I'm looking for a budget 70(ish) - 300mm lens.
Not sure on which one of the ones below to go for

  • Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG Macro
  • Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III
  • Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di LD Macro

All these lens are roughly the same price at about £100 - £120 ish.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Do you still have the 50D ?
Would have thought you would want something a bit better.

I had the Sigma but got rid of it pretty quickly.

Yeah I still have the 50D, would love something a little better. Limited budget though. May just have to wait a little? Which lens would you recommend. My budget definitely won't go to L glass.

Thats the problem with the long end. There are these cheap ones then it is a big jump to the good stuff with not much in between.

Thats a shame really.
May have to do some serious saving or get a teleconvertor???
If I was buying L glass I'd have to get a 24-105 before anything else.

Of the ones you list the Sigma has the best reputation, that said I don't have experience of it and I doubt its that great. The Canon is supposed to be pretty bad, and I owned the Tamron and hated it.

Whey not look at the Canon 50-250mm IS? I think it's better than any of the ones you list and if you go 2nd hand is within your budget.

Although i haven't tried it, I've heard really really good things about the Cheap tamaron 70-300 for people i trust. But a second hand TC and 70-200F4L I guess if you save.

Do you really need the 300mm focal length? If you can live with 250mm then the Canon 55-250mm gets better reviews than the 75-300. Otherwise, if you're going to increase the budget and 200mm is long enough I'd recommend a secondhand Canon 70-200 f/4L

I wanted to try some shots at the Mac Loop.

It's a lovely lens but you're looking at least £360 for a 70-200mm f4l, and then at least another £150 for the Canon 1.4 TC. Quite a lot more than the £100-£120 originally mentioned.

If you're willing to increase your budget you should also consider the 70-300mm IS USM, I reckon you could get one on here for about £280. I owned one of these and quite liked it - certainly it's a lot better than the three lenses in your original post.

I have the very 1st Canon L Tele L Lens. 80-200 2.8L from the 90's yes but its EOS focus is fast just no IS.

Can pick them up for a lot cheaper than current got mine for about £400 from Northern Ireland. They seem to go for around £500 now. I use it daily and have pictures published in the National papers with it.

Heres my pics with the lens on a 400d sometimes with a 1.4TC

I know it's more than you want to spend and not a 300 but the sigma 70-200 f2.8 is a cracking lens I got mine second hand for £450 hardly used, canon equivalent is over a grand! I'm sure other people will disagree but IMO it's great :)

im in a similar situation.. my budget is limited but i really want to get a decent lens.

sticking to your budget i would recommend the canon 55-250.. i have minimal personal experience with the lens myself( had a try in a shop.. its build quality was similar to the 18-55 kit as expected).. However.. it is very often referred to as being exceptional for its price bracket.. with the addition of a decent IS this lens is a very good deal for the price..

then theres a second hand 70-200 f4L non is. i have no personal experience with it yet. all reviews/ comments on this lens are good ones & its always referred to as sharp.. however the price is significantly higher and the focal range notably less.

im still in two minds as to whether to go for the cheaper 55-250 or go for the L.. Id suggest getting down to a shop with a memory card and having a play with them
