I think the same but have yet to put a filter on my latest camera lenses. Sitting there thinking about scratches, I have yet to scratch the lens of a mobile phone camera despite it sitting in pockets with grit etc In all the years I have had binoculars and compact/superzoom cameras ive never scratched a lens. I do wonder how often it actually occurs, and then I start to wonder if i should have a protector on my watch face or car windscreen........
From what i have read online, the longer the focal lenght the more the filter has an effect on the quality. On a 600mm it is advised to not put a filter. Then i haven't run test myself just what i have read online. To be fair I do not use filter on any of my shorter lenght either.
I am generally the one advocating for UV / protective filters... but only on far shorter lenses that don't have big lens hood. Anything up 150-200mm you can get away with top quality filter.
There is no chance you can attach ANYTHING to 400mm, let alone 600mm and not notice a huge drop in image quality.
Therefore most certainly save your money for something else.
