Which book should I get?

I have both of those and they are superb.

They are very different books though.
  • The book by Martin Evening explains in detail the tools, filters, techniques etc available in photoshop but generally leaves you to decide how to you use them in your workflow.
  • The other book by Scott Kelby is more of a tutorial book - It tells you how to do stuff, i.e Whiten teeth/eyes, soften skin, fix distortions, and loads more exciting stuff

I have the Scott Kelby book and it is excellent, make sure you read it all the way through as there many interesting and time saving tips in there. I bought this after I used one of his other books for Elements.

Sounds like it's Scott Kelby that's the one for me then. I'd prefer the "This is the end result, and this is how to achieve it" approach....

Thanks for this thread I too am looking for an "end result" type of book. Would this also work for Elements or does he do a seperate one for that?

Hmmmm, This sounds like the ideal birthday pressy for someone to buy me.

Wheres the best place to get the Scott Kelby book?

I have his elements 4 book and its just as good in terms of advice and guidence.

I find the internet sites like amazon (and play.... something or other) good.

I'm going to say neither. CS3 is just around the door and you'll only have to buy a new book which will cover everything in CS2 and CS3. Although if you really want one now I'm sure there will be guides covering the new toys in CS3 when it comes out. It'd just be nice to have it all in one place I guess.

'spose youre right Pete.

But saying that I do want one now. I've got the Scott Kelby book on preorder at the local library, so I'll be having that for 3 weeks as of next week. If I get on with it (Wont have chance to learn it all by then), then I'll be buying it.

CS3 isn't for a good 5 or 6 months yet is it? ('Announced' in spring IIRC). I haven't really been keeping uptodate on the CS3 news scene if I'm completely honest.

CS3 will probably add a couple of extra widgets but generally speaking most of main stuff will stay the same.

Another vote for Scott Kelby. I also have his "Down & Dirty" Photoshop Tricks book too.

Well I've just picked up the Scott Kelby book from our local library (they dont stock the Martin Evening one).

So I'll see how I get on with it. If I like it, and find it really easy, I'll buy this one :)

Marcel, can you let me know your opinions of the Scott Kelby book as you go through it please?

Certainly will mate. Hoping to have a sit down and a read after tea :)

Ive today ordered both of those books off Amazon... I need books to read at work, so I thought I might as well get some good CS2 guides.... Can anyone recommend general photographer books? I need to work on my compostion, i know its not the best way of learning reading a book, but if i can get tips and tricks to try out its better than nothing... and the bigger the book the better I get about 5hours of reading time/day at work.

another vote for kelby. an interesting, useful and even amusing (in parts) book :)

Marcel did you get the Scott Kelby book? and what did you think of it?

Well I had the Scott Kelby one for 3 weeks. I was planning on extending the loan time from the library and renewing it, so didn't rush through it. Although on the day, the library told me I couldn't renew it as someone had a request on it  Gits.

The bits I did see were very entertaining, and very well written. They were written in quite a friendly, upbeat and humourous way, which I prefer. (Much like the approach to these forums), rather than the stuffy officious and "plum up yer jacksie and a silver spoon in yer mouth" way, which puts me right off.

I'm going to try and get hold of the Martin Evening one to compare, so I'm still undecided.

Except Martin Evening is 25 quid on Amazon at the mo, and Scott Kelby is 15.

I've got read and re-read the Martin Evening book.
It is very good.

I did get it after having some experience with layers/masks/wotnot from playing and CD's off magazine covers (they are a useful source of basic info).

Every knob, button and (some if not all) uses thereof are explained.

It concentrates largely on portraiture, since that's what he does.
However it doesnt just stop there all aspects of img->print are covered. There's even a section on capture (scan, digi, film...)

As a guide to PS2... Buy it / Borrow it / Beg for it... read it.

Anyone got "Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Classroom in a Book)"?

Ive ordered it for a friend for Christmas. Wish I'd read this thread first tho!

Yep. Bought it same time as the Martin Evening book.
It's targetted more at the beginner/learner and has lots of tutorial sections.

TBH I use the other one more.

as part of the BTEC course I did in 2003, I used the classroom in a book tutorials and highly recommend it as a way of learning....I ended up loving following tutorials, the best way to learn IMO :)

A one for Elements is 'The digital Photographer's guide to Photoshop elements 4' by Barry Beckham.
Just started with it, and it has been pointing me in the right directions.

Cheerz
