I am looking at either a Canon 400D or a Pentax K10D. Has anyone got opinions as to which is the best. Or is there a better one around this price range?
Second question, will Canon lenses fit a Pentax camera as I have heard Canon have lenses made of a new type of glass (expensive though)

digital photo did a comparison test this month, in the low budget and mid range budget

the low budget / entry level comparison was between a Nikon d40X and a cannon 400D

the conclusion was .... A tie.

Whilst that doesent answer your question directly in any way, it does give you a hint perhaps, that the people in the know dont rate the pentax high enough to even be involved in the comparrison.

did a quick search for a review on the net and got

the price on that one quotes it as a mid range, so maybe that is why it wasnt mentioned in the comparison.

i think it is fair to say, most people seem to favour nikon or canon as market leaders, so on that alone I personaly would be inclined to go with the canon. You would stand more chance of finding a solution on here or other forums if you have a specific camera question and also the second hand market for lenses and the like is likely to be easier accesable

If I could get all the lenses I wanted with the Pentax fitting, I'd seriously consider the K10D if I was starting from scratch. I've read good reviews, and it is excellent value for money, and the Samsung GX10 is even better value, as it is essentially the same camera.

Canon lenses only fit Canon cameras btw.

The 400D's competitor from Pentax would be either the K100D or K110D, was it a typo?

As already side, with either you will be locked into their systems for lenses and accessories, and this gives a huge benefit to Canon, as well as Nikon, who not only have a large range of their own, have much better support from third-party manufacturers.

But if you know what you want to do and that you can get what you need for a Pentax then it is not so important that there is loads of stuff available that you will never buy.

Image stabilization is better in the lens than the body, but it costs more so maybe the shake reduction technology in the K100D is important to you if you are on a budget, while Canon's lens based system will be better if you are not.

No camera is so bad that you will be disappointed with it, so unless there is something that one does which you really want the best thing is just to go to a shop and try them out and see which you prefer.

It is impossible for most of us to say what is right for you though. For one thing it depends on what you need to use the camera for and what your budget is. But I doubt many of us have practical experience of both cameras to be able to objectively compare.

Pentax have always made excellent cameras and have probably been responsible for more ground breaking innovations in SLRs than any other manufacturer. They've never really made it though in the pro camera market despite a serious attempt with the Pentax LX which didn't tempt the pros away from their Nikons and Canons.

Pentax used to have a back up system of lenses and accessories to rival Canon and Nikon, but their latest generation of lenses is considerably downsized, although there are still plenty of legacy lenses on the market.

I've no doubt the Pentax will be excellent, but if you really want a substantial 'system' backing it up then it suffers badly now in comparison with the Canon.

I found that the K100D is only 6meg pixals and the Canon 400D is 10meg. This is why I was looking at the next range the K10D.
