I've got a 7D and a 50D body and lens wise I've got a 14 yr old 300 2.8 and a new 70-200 mk2. I've spent some time thinking which lens should be on which body for football and keep going round in circles.

I'd really welcome your thoughts and opinions!

Thanks

Dave

i would think the body with the fastest/most accurate AF system should be used with the 70-200mm for the closer range more hectic goalmouth action

if your 70-200 is as tack sharp as mine (OK you can't know mine but) and better than the 300 then I would use that on the 7d for sport and get a 1.4x

I agree. Getting "two man and a ball" pictures is not as essential as a goal strike or celebration, therefore put the fastest & most accurate focusing body on the 70-200.

Interesting. When I've suggested that in the past, I've been shouted down!

Using the better camera on the short lens. It wasn't you btw Tony.

There was a world of difference in the 2 cameras in question before and these 2, if i remember rightly the 2 before were both 1 series cameras, a MKIII and a MKIV.

These 2 cameras arent in the same league as a 1 series

It was a 7D and 1DIII actually, but no point in spatting here about it! :)

I've got a feeling that everyone thinks the same in this case anyway!

Between those 2 then id go the other way and have the long lens on the MKIII but thats for me shooting Rugby, the majority of my shots are outfield so id want the best AF body on those, the 7D is to be blunt pretty ***** compared to a MKIII

But for football. we all know which is the more important type of shot, like Tobers says, it's cele and short range strike on goal sort of stuff, so the better AF body with the shorter lens as the OP specificially asked about footy, if he'd have asked about Rugby he would have gotten a different answer from me at least

I think it was me who posed the question & there was debate on whether to put the old 300/2.8 non is on the MkIV or the MkIII and vice versa with the 70-200/2.8 II.

Thanks everyone for your comments. The point is well made that for the most important football shots I'm more likely to be using the shorter lens so put the best body regarding accurate and speedy focussing on it, which is my 7D.

I'm sure the 1D is a much bette body but I'll need to earn a bot more to be able to afford that!

I'm at Wembley Sunday so will go with the 7D on the 70-200 II - bet all the action will be at the opposite end to which I am!
