Which Background?

I'm looking to get a basic (on a budget) home studio set up just for family and the occasional product shot. I want to get the background sorted before the lights.

First question is what colour? Originally I was going to go for white for the high key type shots but I read (probably here) recently that grey is good to go for as it gives more flexibility. Would you agree?

Second question is what material. I've found the following prices:

Vinyl 2x6m £80 delivered

Muslin 3x6m £34 delivered

Paper 2.7x11m £46 delivered

Value suggests muslin so apart from creases are there any negatives with this compared to the other media?
