Which back up camera???

Hi There,

I currently have a Canon 5D MkII as my main body and I'm finding it more and more of a pain in the middle of a job (Weddings/Portraits) changing lens and perhaps missing a shot!

So over the last few weeks :bang: I have been looking into a second body, I ideally want another full-frame camera so the canon 1D is currently top of the list.

Ideally I don't want to spend over £500 as I'm also looking at getting the 50mm 1.4.

Just wondered if anyone had any other options?? Perhaps a cropped camera isn't the end of the world!
 
just what I was going through t'other week, decided on a 7D and I feel crop compliments the FF 1Dsmk2, it gives you different options plus that shutter burst WOW, add on the AF speed and you got a superb confetti moment camera..

ISO performance is also excellent.
 
The 1D isn't full frame mate, you need a 1Ds for that. but you should be able to get one for 500ish.

I'd go for a 5D mk1 as a backup tbh.
 
@strumstrum - Hhmmm. Definitely food for thought, the main reason I haven't done that yet is my favourite lens to use is the 85mm 1.2, and I already find I'm struggling for space in most shots because of the focal length, and if I use the 7D I would be really pushing my luck. But, saying that I could use the 7d only for the longer shots with my 70-200mm and that would definitely be an advantage.

@simonuk & @rjbell sorry both I meant 5D MkI. I've seen a few for aroudn £500 on ebay so might go down this avenue also!

Another 5Dii.

I found it awkward shooting mkii and mkiii together, even if they are both FF.

Little things like AF difference.
Button layout difference.
Sensor performance difference.

You also get different kind of files, feel and look from different cameras.

Then you got to think about when you format the cards, do you format them all in the 1D or the 5D? Will they work in both if it is formatter in the other? Lucky for the 5Dii that cards formatted in the 5Diii work in it. However, photos taken in the 5Dii does not show up in the screen in the 5Diii (or the other way round).

There are lots of little things so if you can afford it, get the same body.
 
Simple. Get the best for your budget.
I managed to upgrade to a 5D3 and kept the 5D2 as a backup because i coudl afford it.
If i had £500 i probably would get a 600D.

The beauty of a crop is you can stick a cheap WA lens on it and leave it on there. Ala Sigma 10-20.

If you put the 50mm on a 7d you would have the same problem as your 85mm on the 5d.

Sorry the 50mm is for my 5D mkII. I'm leaning towards a 5D mkI simply because of the full frame aspect and that I can pick one up for around £500.00

If I went for a cropped sensor camera, I would have to consciously remember the cropping aspect to the lens and even though if would be a benefit in some occasions, I think the difference in the 2 bodies would be to much of a pain.
