My current set-up is a Speedtouch 510 router/modem connected to my PC with a long telephone extension lead going from the master socket at the front of my house through the living room up the stairs then in to my home office at the back of my house.

I am soon to get an iMac which has built in Wi-Fi, and as I understand it, the closer a modem is connected to the master socket the better speed you may get over the web. So can anyone recommend a good fast, secure and easy to set-up router preferably with 802.11n Wi-Fi .

I would go for one of the Apple Routers, probably the Airport Express, or if you want the remote backup and extra functionality the Time Capsule. These aren't modems, but you will just need to plug the ethernet connection from your existing modem into the Apple router.

Netgear DG834PN - wouldn't buy anything different.

I've had lots of trouble with Linksys kit. Another vote for Netgear here but the DG834G does me fine.

Thanks folk

I don't really want to go the Apple way as that would mean two wall sockets used in staed of one, and it looks to be cheaper buying a new modem.

show me something that hasnt at least got a few people that have had issues with it and i'll be surprised ;)

personally we used to use them in our stores for the ADSL connections that polled sales and stock data back to head office and rarely had an issue that wasnt related to staff battering them.. we only swapped them out because we went for full blown ciscos.
