Hi All

Just got this great lens and don't want to degrade the image quality by using cheap filters.
Can any one recomend a protection/uv filter and also a good quality polariser ?

Thanks in advance

Mark

Conventional wisdom (and a good read on TP) will say that anything put in front of a lens will degrade an image to a greater or lesser extent.

Also, there is a view that a UV filter isnt necessary in everyday photography to protect the lens, just use the hood to protect from knocks and scrapes. The only exception would be in dusty (desert, beach) or wet conditions (sea spray etc)

As for a CP, a B+W or good quality Hoya Pro should do the trick. You should be looking to pay around £150

Hoya Pro or B+W would be my choice if I had the money, as it is I use a Hoya UV and a Jessops CPL and I still think the images are brilliant.

Hoya HMC are typically good enough, I doubt you will see much difference using the most expensive 77mm piece of glass on this planet. No filter is unnecessary risk with that expensive lens as the disaster strikes sooner or later, even within the camera bag.

It's not 'conventional wisdom' it's one conflicting point of view.

I and many others with expensive glass will say the opposite as we actually take our lenses outdoors and use them for more than photographing our own lens-caps on the kitchen table.

Buy a good quality filter like the Hoya Pro...stick it on and forget about it til it gets scratched, then buy another one.
All kit gets damaged sooner or later.
