Yes
sigma, canon and tamron seem to offer one of these and at a reasonable price, since my plans to get the 70-200 f2.8 and 1.4tc have been thwarted for now i need something to fill the whole in my kit at the circa £150 mark

whcih one is the best?

the sigma 70 - 300 super macro APO is a fine lens, or the one i had was!

I've got the Sigma and use it for most of my motorsport shots. Its a nice lens as long as you recognise its limitations - it's slow to focus and 'hunts' a bit in low light conditions, is a bit softer at maximum aperture and when zoomed above 200mm. But I think these limitations probably affect all the lenses in your list.
I'm using it on a Nikon D70, so the 'hunting' problem might be reduced on a faster Nikon or Canon  .
Anyway, I like the lens, though I do still lust after a faster zoom (70-200 2.8 VR) or 300mm 2.8

Hope this helps :)

yeh i was more than understanding that they aint gonna be the quickest focusing lens for that kind of money, seems to be good reviews of the sigma lens online,
one question though. its not a digital only camera is it? as im also a film bunny

thanlks for the help guys, much apreciated!

yey i gather that, APO is the better one

sigma like to confuse us

DC- digital camera only lens
DG- optimised for digital but not digital only....

glad thats impossible to confuse then!

w-w ... I was looking into 70-300mm lenses after my plans to get the new VR one from Nikon were scuppered as the planned October release has been put back to December or 1st quarter of '07 :bang: depending on which "reliable source" you believe ...
Whilst the Sigma APO one is highly rated I was more impressed with what I've seen & heard about the Tamron one - it is macro capable too & I have seen some stunning shots taken with it on Flickr (like HERE)
One-Stop-Digital are doing the Tamron for £99 so I might get one to try while I wait for the Nikon VR to arrive (?)
Regards ... Paul

The Sigma 70-300mm is fine with film as I have one and can use it on both film & digi as it has an aperture ring.

FYI The Sigma is Macro Capable too.

I got mine for 114.99 last year from www.onestop-digital.com

A very worthwhile lens. I did have problems with it, and still do, but if I'm being utterly honest I think those are caused by operator error, as I've had some absolutely stunning results with it too.

FYI The Sigma is Macro Capable too.
Marcel - I said ...
"Whilst the Sigma APO one is highly rated I was more impressed with what I've seen & heard about the Tamron one - it is macro capable too"
... I meant it is macro capable like the Sigma not that the Sigma wasn't  ...

Anyway having seen lots of good results from both they appear great value & very capable in this price bracket - I might even sneak a Tamron in without Mrs PaulBoy's knowledge :naughty:
Paul

PS - Found another superb macro shot taken with the Tamron & a D50 - Warning NOT FOR SQUEAMISH "BUG-A-PHOBES" ...

Ahh no worries, I just read it the other way...That you were saying it as a plus feature for the Tamron...or something like that ...lol

That's what I get for speed readin :D I must slow down :p

relatively how do they focus speedwise? as im mainly gonna be using it for motorsports, im not expecting superquick but out of them which is gonna be quicker!
very very tempted with the sigma personally :)

jamie

They both use the slotted drive screw as far as i am aware so it will really depend on the speed of the camera.

focus isnt lightning fast, but its quick enough for 'normal' photography

The lens has no internal AF motor and relies on a slotted drive screw operated by the camera. Little noisy and slower. If you look at the back of lens you'll see a silver screw with a slot in it, that mates with the lens mount and the drive screw powers the focusing using the onboard camera motor. I am sure someone else can explain it better.

are you sure? my 20D and my older Eos5 have no way of powering such a lens on its own and relys upon a motor within the lens for focusing as far as i can see.

the canon 75-300 uses an inbuilt micromotor.

Pretty sure, I have a Sigma 70-300 DG here that relies on it. Might not be on the APO version,...

I've used the Sigma for all my speedway action stuff since I got the 30D and love it - certainly no regrets about getting it. I bought that rather than the Tamron or Canon equivalents on the strength of a magazine review - I think it was Digital Photo but I can't remember for sure.

As for the focus motor thingy - that lens works fine on my old D30 so it'll be fine on your 20D I would think.

i *think* the 70-300 i had had motor built in..

Taken the plunge and ordered the Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 Lens
If for no other reason this will be my first "L" lens
Paul
BTW I didn't realise Onestop knock a couple of % off if you order by BT

Yup :D

Congrats on the purchase....Hope you'll have many happy shots together :D

ive found a second hand sigma on these forums so im looking into that
yeah saw that too & looks like a good deal - as has been said already as long as we don't expect miracles from a £100 lens neither of us shoulde be dissappointed ... Paul

nope, exactly, either way its going to be better than the 80-200 canon i had previously and that was SHOCKING!

anyway its only a temporary measure til i get that massive payrise at work and replace all my camera gear:bonk: :cuckoo:
