Think that's a different one as it's coming up at over £1000.
The one I was looking at is around £500

I have a nifty 50 and a 35mm I can use indoors

If you can stretch to it the SP VC is the one to go. £949

i have the sigma, the HSM auto focus is very nice, the build qaulity is much better than the tamron, as for picture qaulity, they do me ok,

from what the reviews say though, there both much of a muchness so might be worth you seeing if you can try them side by side and see how you get on with each one

The tamron you have included in your opening post does not have VC but the sigma has OS (ie same thing just called different things by different manufactures). Tamron VC > sigma OS > Tamron non VC.

Therefore out of the two I'd opt for the sigma OS if you cannot stretch to the VC version of the tamron

You may find that a Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 will give a much more useful range.
Otherwise, get the Sigma OS instead of the Tamron you've mentioned, unless you find a good deal on the Tamron VC.

I think you will find the build Quality is the other way around will compared to the VC version and comes out tops in the lens reviews even beating the Nikon after all the tests :D:D:D

If you're thinking about spending a grand, what about the nikkor F/4. It's got vr and pin sharp. Second hand prices seam to be sub £750 as well. And it takes a TC. I use mine with the 14 and 17 with little challenge to the IQ. Had mine for 18 months and love it. So much more transportable than the f/2.8 version.

The op wasn't talking about the Tammy with VC.

I had suggested if he could stretch to the VC before your post, your post said the sigma was better than tarmon
which one might assume you were including the VC version that I had suggested in that statement :)

forget 70-200 far to long for in a house
get yourself the nikon 18-200 fantastic lens works good in the house

OP has nifty 50 and a 35mm he can use indoors

i read that but the 18-200 covers all bases without changing a lens so you dont miss any shots fumbling about
you can also cdop tighter with the zoom aswell

Totally different beasts in my opinion, you cant compare the 18-200mm against a 70-200 f2.8 lens.

Personally, I'd be considering a 2nd hand Nikon 70-200 VR1 - can be had for the price of a new Sigma or Tamron if you look hard enough :).

I use the Sigma 70-200 and its a stunner.

Contrary to many of the results of others mine is sharp wide open, fast and silent focus and I use it for wedding work and other critical work so it works for me, love it.

Oly downside is that the os system is noticably louder than that of a canon l lens so I imagine it is also much louder than a Nikon

Thanks for all the replies, i appreciate your time in answering.

still unsure what to get lol
going to have a think about it and not rush into anything, never spent so much on a lens so i want to get it rright

mat

Ok thinking about it i think i will be using it mainly outdoors as i said i have a couple lenses for indoors anyway.

I'd disagree. If you shoot through a doorway into a room you can use it well. I shot with a sigma 70-200 on the d90 and a vr2 on the d800.

thanks mate

can i ask the approx size of the room?

About 3.5 x 5 m. Furniture and kitchen units around. But I shot in the room with a d90 and from the corridor with the d800.

thanks mate
so about the same as mine then but my room is empty so hopefully i will be ok in there

I always use mine indoors, i shoot our lad with it all the time :)

Here is an absurdly heavy crop to show they resolve detail pretty well to be fair, cropped down from 5472 x 3648 all the way to 849 x 833

And even heavier down to 581 x 475

They are a great lens the sigma in my eyes some unwarented critics of it
