I have about £900 ish to spend on a lens and i am torn between

Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM or the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L USM

gonna be shooting portraits and helping out at weddings with this which would you pick one has is the other doesnt one seems to be made better argghhh help

the canon 70-200 gets some excellent reviews across all the forums
But i dont know the difference personally

How about the OS as well? :-)

You should be able to pick up a canon 70-200 2.8 is mki for close to £900. Someone local to me was selling a minty one for £880 a few weeks back.

Main benefit over the sigma would be build and weather seal.

Sigma one here, pretty good, little slack at 2.8 and needed a bit of microajustment, but still amazing :-)

I can't help with the sigma but I can tell you about the canon 70-200 mk2. It is a brilliant lens. From what I understand the mrk1 is a great lens as well. I had a really hard time justifying the extra cost in the mrk2 because the mrk1 was rated so good.

I have the non IS Canon. To be honest I have never missed the IS. The image quality is superb.

Had this little battle myself i while back. I plumped for the Canon in the end - even though it was the mk11 is version - a steal from Kerso when the cashback offer was on - or so i keep telling myself. Just push the budget as hard as you can and get the best you can. A top quality lens will last many many years

Can only get just past the 900 mark so the is mk II is out of reach for me for now

Go with the Canon. Siggy a good lens but the Canon can be used wide open (surely the whole point of a 2.8?) and is pin sharp!

I went for a used IS canon mk1 for around the 900 mark absolutely superb lens
read many reviews and the sigma has some quality control issues so gave it a wide berth

I'm with taz. You can pick up a good second hand one for 600ish. Lighter and sharper than the 2.8 or 2.8 IS, which for me makes up for the loss of a stop.

How does it handle being in
Low light situations though bring f4
with the ISO these days , you can just wind that UP - assuming it can focus OK at low light - but the trend these days seems to be very very shallow DoF , even on portraits shot at F1.8
in some images I see DoF is so shallow

Seriously, have you tried the search facility??

This is possibly the most discussed topic on here!

So is the Sigma? Mine is pin sharp at f/2.8.

Bit of a bizarre comment?

So the most discussed topic is between sigma with os vs non is canon? When ever I've looked it's been between the sigma with os and the canon mii with is.

Theres quite a few of the non OS Siggy too, Siggy OS / Canon IS etc... (as I've posted in them!), just trying to save you some time as you may find your answers there.
