I want to get myself a 50mm prime lens for my Nikon D7000. I thought that I wanted the 1.8D but have just seen a review that has pushed me towards the 1.8G. I know the 1.8D is cheaper but it seems to lack the build qaulity of the 1.8G.

My question TP is which one should I go for? This would be my first ever prime lens and I thought the 1.8 D would do me best. If I didn't get on with it then I've only spent about £100.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

The 1.8G is meant to be brilliant, even sharper than the 1.4G

Dont know about Nikon lenses, so I'll base my answer on Canon lenses. If a Canon user asked the same question, I'd answer go for the cheaper one as you are not sure if you'll like the focal range. If you like it then you can sell the plastic 50 with minimal loss and get the better fifty (50 f1.4)
To me it sounds like you've already answered your own question.

The 1.8 G certainly is a great piece of glass. Personally, I have the 1.8 D which I use on my D700 and absolutely love it. Although it is mainly plastic, I think it still feels solid. I always take it out with me, and generally make sure I use it.

Sigma 50mm f1.4. It's the class leader.

Many thanks for all the advice, I think I just wanted a 2nd opinion. 1.8D it is and if I get on with it then I can always upgrade. I think the Sigma is a bit out of my price range.

Some review mention that the 50mm f1.8D is very very sharp. Great piece if lens for the price still lol. Less then £100 and get great quality, metal mount as well which is good lol.
