Hi all,

I would like to purchase my first prime 50mm prime lens.:)
I was looking what is available in f1.4 range a I found: :)
a) Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Lens
b) Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens

Please reply to my post and advise me. :)
Please tell me what is the difference between these two?:)
Prise is different for about 100 punds. But this time is not about money but the right choice. :)
I will be highly appreciated for all you help.

Thanks !

I have had both of these the 50mm 1.4g is a much better lens, the 50 1.8g is also well worth a look.

For the price of the 50mm f1.4g you could get the 35+50 f1.8g lenses nearly.

Out of the two you have listed, they differ in one being motor driven for focus by the body, that being the D version, the G version has a built in focus motor in the lens so is suitable for all Nikon body's even one's without the focus motor like the D5200.

That's is not the only difference optically the G versions of the 50mm's are better.

Yes that as well, also on youtube there is some nice video's comparing the two G versions, 1.8g vs 1.4g, I all ways see the 1.8g come out on top out of the two in picture quality and sharpness.

As you would expect its a much newer lens. Could be wrong but I remember reading online somewhere that for full frame the 1.4g is recomended and for dx the 1.8g is recomended. The dxo mark bench tests bear this out as well.

One downside though, the 1.8g isn't much good at 1.4 :)

I tried both the 50 1.4g and 1.8g and chose the 1.8g.

The focus speed of the 1.8 is quicker and noticeable in real world conditions.

Best 50 I have ever used TBH.

This is right the 1.8g does focus a little quicker not much in it though.

Although I may be selling mine soon. I find it a bit of an odd length on a crop. I had intended to use it on the D600 but i'm selling that so may well get a 35mm/85mm combo instead.

For the D90, I'd suggest the 1.8G. As others have noted, it's a cracking lens and sharper in the centre than the 1.4G. The 1.4G is sharper at the edges - hence its popularity on FF.

Get 50 1.8 D sharp and cheap - therefore you can get the 35 f1.8 G DX as well for similar money. Bonus!

Thank you for good advice! :):):)

If you decide to buy lenses where you usually purchase yours?

Did you ever heard about http://www.valuebasket.com/?

Cheers

I need to review all information's you posted. Any additional info, I will be very grateful.

I have bought all my 2nd hand lenses here on the classifieds. Been good so far. If I was spending tons for a 70-200 f2.8 I would go 2nd hand to a dealer. 50mm lenses are simple, cheap and robust - especially the D series!

I'm will look into all prime lenses you mentioned in the these posts.

Thank you all very much for info and advice.

Where do you purchase your lenses?

Regards
Eve

Thanks Ivan, you right for a price of Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens I could get 50mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.8

Did any of you use 50mm f1.4 G AF-S and 50mm f1.8G AF-S to make comparison for these both lenses?

IS a big difference between f1.4 and f1.8?

I'm only asking because a lots of people saying that they bought f1.8 first and then upgraded to f1.4. Understand me I'm a woman and we get confused if we get too much choice: lol::lol::lol:
