Hi there,

I am looking for a 35mm AF f/1.8 or f/2 for my D200

Which one would you recommend?

I was looking at the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX. Any other lens I should consider?

I also saw the Nikon 35mm f/2D AF, but I don't get what makes it more expensive than the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX, perhaps you could shed some light on this?

Cheers

You want the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX.

The 35mm F/2 is an FX lens hence the increased cost.

I have just got a SAMYANG 35mm f1.4 AS UMC lens, it is manual focus but so far it has out performed my friends Canon 35mm L....... Im just as shocked as he is.

isn't that an FX lens too

and at double the price of the 35mm DX

Im not sure honestly, I have only tried it on my 7D that is a crop.

If I understand, I have a D200 (DX) so I should buy the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX, right?

What about the cropping effect, would that make a difference on the size of the frame whether I use the DX lens or FX lens?

It's a 35mm regardless of whether you opt for the f/1.8 or the f/2. The angle of view (due to the 1.5x cropped sensor) is closer to that of 52mm (close enough).

The f/1.8 lens has a reduced image circle that's optimised for the smaller DX sensor. The f/2 version was designed for 3mm film cameras so can be used on both. The f/1.8 with autofocus on all Nikon bodies. The f/2 is crew-driven so will only work in AF mode on bodies with a built-in motor (your D200 is fine)

I recently bought the f/1.8 and have to say that it's a cracker optically and is pretty well made too :)

The F1.8 DX lens is quite nice,I just picked one up s/h £115.

The price of the 35mm F2,seemed to have gone up a lot lately, s/h you could pick one for around £120/£130 Mark, now they seem to start at about £170.

:)

Just sold my f/2 for £200 on ebay - I really liked it but prefer my 28/2.8 but 35 is a very popular focal length choice and lots of cameras like the Fuji X100 and Leica X1 use it.

I've got both and I'd say that optically the 1.8 is better and it has the full time manual over ride too. If you're using DX for me there is only one option as far I'm concerned.

Wow that's a good price,MPB had quite a few of them selling at £129 a little while back :)

Thanks for your posts and help. I reckon I'll go for the DX. I don't think that would be worth for me to spend the extra bucks needed to get the FX!

I thought the X100 was 23mm not 35?

The 35 1.8 DX is a fantastic lens. Kept it along with the D40 when I sold all my other Nikon gear (D7K plus a few fast zooms) and moved over to Pentax. As long as you don't plan on moving FF just buy it. Even if you do go FF you could still keep it and carry it around when you'd rather go light!

Thanks. Just waiting for my trip to the US to buy it now!

nikon f1.8 35mm
sigma 30mm f1.4
samyang 35mm f1.4

Probably best if you can try it on your camera to see which feels the best/gives the results you want.

Tried a 30mm (links on the flickr link in sig) liked it but had a slightly off focus one :/
Tried a 35mm f1.8 recently - very nice and not overly expensive.
Only tried a 14mm samyang, but have seen an 8 mm... construction and optics seem spot on, but its manual only... (I think).

Good luck n post up the pics once you get one..!

I have the 35mm f/2 and it isn't brilliant. I think Nawty's got it right. All reports say the new 35mm f/1.8 is much better.

Thanks for that!

Just bought the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX today and will be picking it up tomorrow so will let you know what i think when i have had a chance to fire off a few frames!

Didn't get the lens in the end...Hope you enjoy yours!
