Which 10 stop? Lee or Firecrest?

I have used both Lee and Firecrest and settled with Lee. It is a lot about finding one that is accurate. My advice would be, when you buy one, get out and try it straight away, in as many of the conditions you will normally use it. If find it is no good ask for it to be swapped. I had heard Firecrest was good but tried 3 before sending them all back bacause colours were no good. Lee on the other hand are fine no cast and accurate colour represents.

Do you have any example images of the Firecrest poor results?

I know that the older Hitech ND filters had quite a colour cast and I found them unusable - all my firecrests have been very good though.

It is commonly agreed by all the reviews and people I talk to that Lee has a slight blue cast.

And this why I can't make my mind up !
I understand that PP can correct casts, to a greater or lesser degree, but I am

A) Old school, and like getting it as close to finished as possible in camera.
B) Lazy, and can't be @rsed to mess around with too much PP !
Would be interesting to see comparisons on here, uncorrected, and corrected of all the options though.

You think this is hard - wait until you start looking for the holder and circular polariser ;)

The only reason I haven't ordered the filter yet, is that I have ordered a filter holder from the states from the Filterdude. As soon as it comes, I'll order the filter.
As for a polariser, that's a whole new set of dilemmas I suspect !

Interesting thread this as I'll be looking at one of these filters also in the near future, great input everyone, appreciated. I've the Lee 100mm set-up myself.

I personally think a 10 stop is way too much in my eyes, so I'll be chasing a 6 stop in the near future. Great replies, keep them coming guys n' gals.

:)
I think the number of stops you use really depends on the conditions and the look you want.

Probably not have any shots from Firecrest. I am ruthless at cleaning out disks.

I know what you are meaning aboout Hitech. Red colour cast on all I tried as soon as there was any direct sunlight in the shot. I do have an old 4-stop ND that I carry but only use for mono.

I agree entirely.
Landscapes are new to me, so I am yet to develop a style, or decide exactly which way to go.
I do know what I DON'T like though, and although I like the softened water and clouds, often (like HDR) the effect is overdone, and so I am leaning towards slightly less.
Hence my first filter will probably be a 6 stop.
And of course, mono can work beautifully for landscapes.

You might also want to check on Progrey filters. Here's a link on my review of their 10 Stop ND filter: https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/progrey-10-stop-nd-filter.591718/

Thanks for that John, that's a really good review.
I had heard of Progrey, but sort of forgot about them, as they are not talked about all that often on this side of the pond.
The reviews I have read are very very good though.
The only ND filter I use at the moment is a screw in for my 135 f2 lens, so I can use it wide open in daylight.
This filter is by Breakthrough , again an American company, and again, not easy to find over here.
I had to import directly from them. (Without problems)
A great filter, very neutral, but they don't do square filters, unfortunately.
I'll have another look, and see if they are available, and whether they do a 6 stop.
Thanks again for the heads up.

The search continues . . . . . .

Hi Gary, you wont get any problems buying from them, their customer service is one of the best. Progrey don't have 6 stop ND, instead they have 7 stop ND filter.
Oh and their filters are in square format :)
