Hello

Im looking for opinions on what 1.4x to go for.

I currently have a Kenko 2x that when used with my Sigma 70-200 is pants, af is grand but IQ is barely passable. I have tried it however on an old Sigma 400/5.6 and was blown away at how little it effected in the Image quality, it was great!

Im told the 70-200 will not get on well with anything other than a 1.4x

So my question is really do i go for a genuine Sigma one or go for the Kenko one which i think may be more versatile in the long run?

cheers Neil

PS anyone got any shots they can show me taken with a 70-200 and a 1.4x?

Ill show you some taken with a 2x in return :D

Well here is a couple taken with a 70-200 F4L plus Canon 1.4 T/C. You could always buy an old Sigi 400 if your T/C works that well with it though

Which 2x do you have? There are a few Kenko ones....

Your OP asks which 1.4 to get, and asked for some pics to be posted. However you are now asking what 2x T/C I have. I am confused :thinking:

I am interested in the great 1.4x debate too (To match up to a 70-200 f4L IS USM), any more samples u8myufo?

A quick overview of T/C's based on some testing I did a while back.

Canon and Kenko Pro 300's are pretty much equal in terms of IQ
Kenko MC-4 and MC-7 versions are noticeably inferior.
Sigma PRO DG have similar IQ to the Canon and Kenko PRO 300's but have a different colourcast when used on non-Sigma lenses....I assume that it's caused by different spectral coatings.

My advice would be the following;

If you need weather sealing and are using Canon L lenses then opt for the Canon version.
Kenko provides a cheaper option with comparable IQ if weather sealing isn't an issue.
Use a Sigma T/C if the main usage is to be on Sigma lenses but be prepared to see colour differences if popped onto a Canon lens.
Kenko MC-4 and MC-7's will give poor quality (especially on zooms)

In addition, I'm told that the Tamron 1.4 is pretty much the same piece of kit as the Kenko, and might be available cheaper.

well once i have my 70-200 f/2.8 back from sigma hopefully today then i can post some shots using my sigma 1.4 TC

Im not 100% which one it is tbh. Its white if it helps lol??? Ill check it out later and let you know.

Thanks for the comparisions Canon bob and u8myufo for the sample images.

Will the Kenko give a colour cast if used with a sigma? or is the Kenko neutral in terms of coatings?

The body nor lens is weather sealed so its not an issue, ill stick the whole thing in a plastic bag if it ever gets real bad lol.
I mainly shoot with sigma purely because i cant justify the cost of canon gear at the min.

Sorry, I didn't have a Sigma lens to try the reverse setup.

Ne worry, the white one is their pro range so you are using one that is of appropriate quality for your lens. Just wanted to make sure you wern't seeing bad results from a poor TC.

Peronsally I have good results from my Sigma 1.4 EX convertor.

I use a Kenko Pro 1.4 with a Sigma 100-300 and I have never noticed any unusual colour cast with it.

Can't really comment on the quality/degrading issue as I have never really made direct comparisons with and without but it generally seems OK.

Are the Sigma PRO DG`s limited then to just few of the Sigma primes and zooms? as is the Canon TC`s are to the L series?

The Sigma EX TC's will only physically fit on some lenses, yes, they are not limited just to Sigma lenses though. They will not fit onto many of the consumer zooms due to the TC elements fouling on the rear element of the lens.
