Where's the first place you go for your equipment?

I ask this question just for interest's sake as I'm not always sure if I'm looking in the best place or places for photography equipment. I always start by looking on Amazon due to the competitive prices, the huge range of different makes and models of most photography gear, and the helpful reviews. I know you can't see the items in the flesh though, which is a drawback, and the reviews can't always be trusted.

So do you start with Amazon, eBay, the "for sale" section on TP, or do you go to one of the highstreet stores or your local camera shop? Or maybe somewhere else?

I tend to check the local camera shops first to get an idea of what it looks & feels like before going to ebay/Amazon to get it cheaper. Sometimes the shops will let you test the cameras if you're willing to leave your wallet/car keys etc.

If I were buying new kit, camerapricebuster would be the first port of call, simply to give me a starting point on how much I can expect to pay.

As I'm usually buying used kit at the moment, I generally look at the bay to start with, then a couple of good second hand shops and the decision comes down to which has the best example at the best price. It's sometimes surprising how an item can go for a premium on ebay when it's available cheaper and sometimes with a warranty from a store like Ffordes.

The wifes handbag

adorama because I like their website and it tells me what I could buy it for in the US.

Then of course I have to decide if the price here is worth sending extra to have it now and not carry it.

Thanks
Rick

Kerso for new, for sale forums here or MPB for old. Always with one eye on camerapricebuster to know how much of a bargain (or not) I'm getting.

I use my local camera shop, for bodys, lens etc. as they will haggle close to internet prices plus it is supporting my local camera shop. Memory cards, battery's etc I will buy on-line.

I normally use camerapricebuster to check for new kit and MPB for 2nd hand stuff.

I'd love to look at the For sale section of these forums, but I need to wait another month :(

Actually, considering how much I spend lately on my new hobby, it's probably for the best!!

My shopping list grows ever bigger every day......(SB700, 85mm lens, 17-50 lens, D3S.....)

Check all over net for prices including CameraPriceBuster.

Usually buy from Amazon, but after just receiving a Sigma grey import a few days ago my opinion has changed.
Sometimes Jessops are competitive, sometimes CameraWorld. AVF and here are often good bets too, but I treat eBay more for sales rather than buying!

I look at prices on camerapricebuster, but usually end up buying from trusted sources like Warehouse Express and sometimes Park Cameras. Have used Jacobs when they would price match, but would now only really consider them for their specials at Focus.

Try to avoid Jessops and any Dixons Group store like the plague

I check camerapricebuster then usually pick the cheapest price from a retailer I like.

Camerapricebuster, Kerso, Digital Rev, Onestop-Digital, Google Shopping.

I don't just go for the lowest price, but the best value, considering any risks or inconvenience with warranty and returns etc..

I'll also check Quidco and TopCashBack to see whether there are any worthwhile cash back deals to swing the decision. I've had as much as 10% cash back from Jessops before now, which I used when buying my 7D and 5D2 in order to undercut any other supplier in the UK or abroad.
