Had a job interview today and this dreaded question was asked.

At almost 50 years of age I didn't really give a very ambitious answer.:(
What would you say to your employer (or potential employer)?
What would you reallywant? (The latter also applies if you are your own boss).
 
As part of our yearly review I was asked this question. Where do you see yourself in three years time. I said to the boss, who I'm friendly with, "3 years nearer retirement." lol:D
 
I've only ever been asked that question once.

I refused to answer it on the grounds that to envisage being somewhere in 3 years (they asked 3 rather than 5) time would potentially blinker me to other opportunities that may present themselves and result in me not being in as good a place as I could be by being too focussed on a single goal.

I got the job :lol:
 
I see it as the same monkey different organ grinder.

I've been put on notice of redundancy 6 times in 5 years so I know that no job is safe any more.

So where would I like to be in 5 years, I'd love to be a freelance tog, good enough to earn a decent living. Working for myself and enjoying what I do.

Where realistically will I be. Probably doing the same old sh** but hopefully having seen a bit more of the world, and maybe taking half decent photographs.

If I realise that I'll be happy enough in life, boring but hey ho.... :D

I've been on the other side were fellow panel members have insisted upon asking this question.
First off its just one of those questions to ask to fill the time! They have to ask something!
Second, there probably seeking an indication of your level of commitment to the firm. Answering "Retired and on the beech", probably isn't the best of answers. Did you show some understanding of possible advancement routs for you in the company? Shows you've researched them if you did. A reasonable answer gains you points, too optimistic and you loose them!

I suppose it depends how much you want the job as to how much you lie and crawl.
Either way, its just a job, good luck. Now back to one of the more important things of life, - Photography! :p

Basically, I said (in so many words) I'd love to be working for this company, where I can see myself enjoying my work, earning a fair wage and contributing towards it's continuing success.

Did you really say that? think I would choke on words like that.

Always tell them the truth along the lines of 35 years with you lot is more than enough for me and would bite your hand off for a redundancy package
 
Hopefully at about 5 years from now, starting to move from commercial assisting to my own editorial and advertising photography.

Ten years, to have my own studio/office and be working with respectable advertising clients. That's the plan, anyway.

I was asked the same question by the top man of a company I had applied to and I said to him 'Doing your job', that was 35 years ago and I'm still waiting to hear from them.

Take that as a no then.:shake:
 
My wife is a mature student (56) and was asked the same question as part of a "Life Skills" programme, or something like that, developed for students in their late teens. Her tutor told her to make something up. I'd be tempted to do the same, in the OPs position.

I am planning to at least semi-retire at 55 so in 5 years time I will be planning a party and booking a big trip watch this space....
