Yes
I have literally no clue what the technical name is, but I've got an big hard case from Jessops that used to have the foam where it's sort of perforated, and you take out the bits you don't want. Anyways, lost the foam years ago, but now I want some more but have no idea where to get it from! Does anyone have any ideas?! Or even what it's called? Cheers for any help!

Chris

It's called Pick and Pluck (or a variation of), probably cost as much for the foam as a new case though....

the pelican replacements are pretty high quality , we use them at work. can't speak for any of the non branded stuff though.

Woah, just looked it up (thanks for the terminology, "pick and pluck", must make mental note), it's expensive! Might just buy a new case :(

Thanks anyway

I'm not sure what the process involves. If you take the pic with the guns above, what is the foam made of and is it more rigid than the softer pick & pluck foam? Would it be all one unit or a number of layers?

I use Storm & Peli cases. Both fairly small. One holds a D3, 70-200, 24-70 & 14-24. The Peli holds a D700. 17-35 & 2 x flashes & Lee filter set. A custom made insert for each would be great.

Some of the prices for foam inserts are crackers. I have no idea how much a custom made insert would be?

Chris :)

I have no idea how much a custom foam insert would be, so don't even know the price range, but the peli 1510 adjustable foam inserts are http://www.waterproof-cases.co.uk/peli_1510_case-p-26_106.html £60ish inc VAT, so around, or less than that, would be best - not sure of the benefits of custom foam (yet still kinda generic) vs the readjustable foam inserts?

If I could get a peli 1510 (£110, as above) and a custom foam insert that was cut to accept 2* pro slrs, gripped, and a set of 2.8 glass (uwa/wide to normal/tele), couple of primes / other lenses, 2 speedlights, and accessories (ttl cable, batteries, pws), for a total of £150ish (so £40 for the foam), I'd be all over it :) Not a clue if that's the right kind of ballpark even - apologies if it's waaaay too low :P

(I *think* that that's about the right amount of gear to stuff inside a 1510...)

im sure you would all be interested, but he can cough up for advertising first..- removed the posts, its not a market you know!

different types of foam are made in different ways, moulded, cut or DIY. the sort shown in the piccie i just removed looked like a moulded part (kind of like the stuff you get a Dell pc in these days) CNC routing can make other parts but it really depends on foam grade, density, strength and longevity, you dont want foam degrading all over your parts do you!

Didn't realise I was breaking any rules, and certainly didn't intend to. Sorry.

Just as an aside though, if my work is good enough for military spec equipment then I'm sure it would be more than adequate for cameras.

I'll just wait till I'm up to the required amount of posts and then stick something solid in the classified.

Sorry once again.

I take it it would be okay to start a discussion about it in the Talk Equipment forum?

i think what matty is saying is if you want to sell these then you will have to cough money up for a advert to sell these unless it is basically used or virtually new still with reciept

basically if you are on about selling multiple of these units then you automatically become a trader so will then need to pay TP for trading and advertising

I bought some foam from the local market.

2 cm base layer
10cm middle layer
2cm lid layer

I then cut the shapes out of the middle layer to suit my gear

Cheap & cheerfull :D
