I am looking to get 2 Canon lenses at the moment, a 70-200 f/2.8L and 17-40f/4L.
Can anyone recommend anywhere that will do these second hand at a good price apart from MPB and Filter Fantastic as they have none.

Or if indeed you know anywhere that is selling brand new at a good price also.
Jessops have the 17-40 brand new for £489 which is quite tempting but just want to see what the options are beforehand.

Also if you were going to concentrate on portrait, studio and possible wedding work would the 70-200 f/4 cut it or is the f/2.8 a must? Obviously the price drops a fair bit if I go down to the f/4 but is it really worth the saving in the long run??

Cheers

There is a user on here Kerso who sells new lens, he has given me good service and prices in the past, if you do a search on him on here you will get more info.

Paul you have a PM, I did'nt want to put it on here as I wanted to let you know first

I looked him up quickly on ebay and he only had the 70-200 but it was quite steep on price

Mifsuds are listing a 17-40 f/4 L for £399 2nd hand.

Don't know if you've seen this already, but this is a handy list of used equipment suppliers.

Check out this link for the best prices new, as for eBay (US and/or HK) prices have increase signifcantly over past few months and deals aren't as good (if not worse, than 6 months ago, due to poor Xchange rate)

As for secondhand dealers, most of my friends have had dealings with these shops and previously had no problems.

Yeah noticed Ebay has gone nuts on prices. Will look up the links and see what they got. Cheers

so what about the 70-200 f/2.8 and f/4 versions. Is the extra stops for light worth spending the extra money or for what its worth is the f/4 good enough for doing portrait studio and maybe weddings etc?

If you don't need the IS, the 70-200mm f2.8 is a great lens and significantly cheaper than the IS version warehouseexpress £759 compared with £1198 for IS and yes it is worth the extra ££ for the f2.8 in my opinion, f2.8 is the minimum you would use for indoor work, the faster the better for indoor work. I use mine for motorsport when I can get close enough to the track.

Doesn't work well with the canon teleconvertors, or I've not been that impressed with the results unless in good light, but on its own, can't fault my f2.8 IS version.

Thanks pete

You ever compared IS and non IS or seen anything, i.e. comparison of images, which made you say you had to have the IS version?

I contacted Kerso recently and he said that due to the state of the pound v dollar, his prices weren't so hot at the moment. Normally though, I would definitely recommend him.

Yeah I thought that would be the case thats why I only briefly had a look at what he had on Ebay. Didnt want to ask for prices knowing full well they would be higher than what I could get round here, wasting his time really.

Paul,

I've received excellent service from Surrey Photographic and they appear to have both these lenses in their secondhand stock.

Pete's a good guy to deal with.

Bob

At £310 that is an excellent price for a mint 70-200 F4 from a dealer!!! (and not a bad price if it were private) considering the cheapest on "Camera price buster" is quoted at £409!!

yeah it is a good price, so is the f/2.8 version.

I have emailed them to see if they can do me a price on a 70-200 and a 17-40.
Got some cash and its burning a hole in my pocket before the missus gets hold of it! haha

Thanks for that.

I have had a quick look and I can see the 70-200 but no 17-40, am I just being daft??

Nope....it's either vanished today or I had a "senior moment" and got it mixed up with the 24-70L

Sorry :(

I've priced a couple of lenses off Kerso in the last few days and they are still a little cheaper than anywhere else. His prices are better when you buy direct and not off eBay btw.

Thanks pete

It is said that `non IS` lens gives sharper pictures than the `IS` due to the extra elements in the `IS` lens.

I am sure someone will let us know if this is the case.

Cheers

I have the IS F4 and must say that the new IS system is fantastic when using the full lenght of the lens hand held. Others will say go for the non IS 2.8 as it is faster glass but even then it would be better to get the IS if you plan to hand hold your shots. I can shoot down to around 1/15 at 200mm.

Choccy...

do not use TRADECAMERASONLINE they will take you money and amonth later you might be lucky and recieve a imported gear.
