Hello, due to a few more pennies being available I am going to try to move up a bit from my current lens a 70-300 VRII (D7000 body) to a Sigma 150-500 the latest version.

Now my quandry is I can buy it brand new from say Amazon for £730 ish and get a full sigma warranty or I can say get it from procamerashop for £610 and probably settle for there 1 year warranty which will be fullfilled by them and is a bit shorter than I believe the Sigma 3 year warranty for a UK product?

or I can buy a used one but the used ones are only a small bit cheaper than a new one from procamerashop?

what are the thoughts, please dont suggest I can do better by spending another £xxx pounds becasue really I am sretching a lot to the Sigma as it is.

I would in the future like a Nikon 300mm F4 and maybe a tele but for the time being this year I think the Sigma would be a good lens for me.

I wouldn't buy used for that kind of price as warranty would be my major concern.
£120 for 2 years extra warranty, hmm, well if you plan to keep it that long it would certainly be worth it if you intend to use it a lot, if you think you will only have it a year until you get your mits on a Nikon 300mm then I would put the £120 away towards the nikon.

Thanks Ivan I think its the way forward for me, although I may end up keeping the Sigma a little while longer I feel if something is going to go wrong it would probably happen in the first year of ownership?

...but the Amazon one is from Luzerne which is not UK stock and is marketplace trader not Amazon itself.

You need to click "More Buying Choices" on the right and Amazon are a listed seller.

Have you thought about maybe going for a manual focus option and putting the remaining cash towards the 300mm F4?

You could pick up a good second hand nikkor 300mm F4.5 ED IF for under £200, probably way under that if your lucky like I was.
Cracking lens, nice & sharp, even wide open.

to be honest i can't manual focus for toffee, i'm looking at the Sigma as a one stop lens for my nature walks that will extend my 70-300 a bit further and in a year or two i can maybe move it on for very little loss.

I just got a mail back from the above camer centre uk to confirm all there stock is uk and with the sigma 3 year warranty so i think i will be ordering from them later in the week, £699+£5 delivery :)

Nice one Paul. I've been wondering which way to go myself for a while, having only a 70-300 these days. I definitely want more reach and the 150-500 gets a lot of praise.

yes it does and as the yanks say its a lot of bang for your buck, one day in the future i might realy step up but for my level of piccie taking i think the 150-500 might be a great way to get some of those little birdies a bit bigger :)

I'm sure you'll love it when you get it Paul. I've had mine since jan 2012 and I've got some great aircraft and wildlife shots with it and I love mine. It's quite heavy though so it might take you a while to build up your muscles to use it handheld all day lol. If you're interested, a lot of my plane and bird photos on my Flickr account have been taken with it and I find it a pleasure to use. Mine's pretty good wide open but by the time I get to f8 it's razor like.

CRACKING PICS MATE!

I will be ordering the lens tonight!
My only thoughts now is do I sell the 70-300 in the near future?

I've kept my 70-300 find its better than carrying the sigma on a casual photo walkabouts

Yes I know what you mean, thing is I only do nature walks with my 70-300 and apart from an 18-105 its the only lens I own, my enjoyment is nature and lil birdies and stuff so I sort of think I would just use the sigma and never bother fitting the 70-300 simply as I would not want to miss a shot because I had the shorter lens on.

Have you considered paying the extra and getting the 50-500?

Why?

Seems to be £300 more for no more reach?

anyhow i'm skint I just ordered the 150 500 :D

...you won't be saying that when the b****y bird is too close! :D

I don't think you will be disappointed with the 150-500 once yoy get used to it!

If it gets that close I will pop it in my pocket and take it home :)

Because you were previously using a 70-300 and you presumably had a use for the 70-150 part of the range?

Because sometimes the 150 end is too long and you don't want to/can't switch to a shorter lens?

I had the 150-500 and I've now got the 50-500. The change has been well worthwhile and I wish I'd got the 50-500 originally and not had to lose £££ on the switch.

to be honest not really, my passion is nature and birdies and frogs and rarely use the short end of the lens and for the extra £300 its not happening, thanks anyway.
