Hi - just getting back into photography after a few years away.. Am now the proud owner of a 450D, with the 18-55 and 55-250 IS kit lenses.. Also have a nifty fifty, and the EF-s 60mm Macro coming hopefully today.

Anyhoo, most of my photographic time will be spent with the kids and dog, whilst out walking on and around the Malverns.. Probablly won't have much time to set up for, or indeed wait for shots (Either landscape or wildlife..) as I can guarantee that either the dog will off run off and be chasing rabbits or the 2 boys will be messing around within seconds of my trying to set up something..

So pretty much everything will be a candid shot.

My question is, given those 4 lenses, what would you look to buy next?

could be an addition, or a replacement - I'm open to ideas either way!

Also have a nifty fifty, ....

Can't help on where to go next but the nifty fifty is ideal for this type of shot. Really quick so you can get sharp shots even in less light or with the dog/kids moving, its light/not bulky and its around the right balance between wide and narrow. I am sure there will be some L glass zoom going from 17-85 that would be better but I am a Nikon person!

On the rare time you do have time to compose on a tripod etc. especially given where you live, I'd suggest adding a Sigma 10-20mm to your arsenal. I'd imagine the Malvern hills are very photogenic and would allow you to capture plenty of detail..

Tony, the 60mm macro lens should be with you; according to the online Royal Mail tracking service, it was delivered yesterday by RMSD. Hope you enjoy it, very sad to see it go:'( Sounds like she's going to a good home though!

LOL.. posty did indeed drop the bit of paper through our letter box... which our lovelly golden retriever then ate!!

Hopefully my wife will get chance to collect today, so in advance - many thanks!

Seems to me that a flashgun might be a good thing to add to your kit - for fill-in of the kids and dog outdoors (if we ever get enough sun to make shadows that need filling) and to improve your shots indoors when you get the kids and dog home.

Perhaps you should also consider a belt system to carry your kit around - far quicker than rummaging around in a bag or backpack and ideal for your walks.

Lens wise I think you've got it more or less covered for the type of photography you intend on doing.
If you want something wider for doing landscapes then perhaps a Sigma 10-20mm lens (as markta has suggested).
This will probably be the next lens I purchase.
I've also got the 50-250mm and so far, I've found it fine for wildlife although I admit, there have been a couple of time where an extra 50mm would have come in handy.
How about something like the the Canon 17-85mm IS lens?
After having a play with my stepdaughters hubbys 17-85mm IS USM kit lens, I toyed with the idea of replacing my 18-55mm IS kit lens with one.
However, the price didn't seem justifiable.
Having since found one on ebay for a reasonable price I have won it and it should arrive tomorrow :)
Other than that perpaps L glass but this is serious money.

Think you have plenty of stuff for starters now get out and start shooting, you'll soon find out whats missing when you get frustrated because you can't get wide enough or the shutter speeds drop to low and you need a flash.

hmmm, can i use tele convertors.. ie 1.4 or 2x kenko or if i win the lottery canon ones with ef-s lenses?

ps... thankyou everyone for the replies!

i,d go for the 17 to 85 IS usm.
i used one on the 350 and now on my 30.
brilliant all round lens . it blows the 18-55 into the weeds. quicker focusing and WAY better quality pics.and it feels much nicer to use too.
unfortunately after 18 months of hard use(weddings every weekend) its gone back to canon for a fettle , cos its playing up.
i:(

I know for a fact that Canon extenders won't work on EF-S lenses, only EFs and only the beige 'L' series glass at that..as for Kenkos, haven't a clue but would be interested to find out

Having used both, I agree, but whether the 17-85 is £300 better, not so sure :thinking:

The 17-85 IS USM can be had for £250 from camerabox.
Or via Ebay they seem to go for £180-£200.
I'm waiting for a 2 month old one to arrive that I won for £185.

Good point, I think the cheapest way to get one in excellent mint condition is when people buy the 40D kit, then seperate the 17-85 and trade it in for say an L lens...

The fact that it won't be boxed should drive the price down etc. In that case, it has to be worth the extra then, even though it does suffer from pincushion, CAs and barrel distortion at the extreme ends...

Exactly, mine was with the 40D kit.
