Ok, so call me crazy but I'm fancying a weeks holiday somewhere in Wales but don't really know where. We've camped at Betws y Coed before and iirc it is a very scenic place. So had considered there, but where's best for photo opportunities? Obviously I'm basing the decision on photography, just don't tell the missus. :LOL:

I don't really have a favourite subject so the chance to shoot all sorts will be good.

Rugged Mountains > Gwynedd / Conwy
Cliffs and coast > Pembrokeshire
Gentle Rolling Hills > Powys
 
Road trip it is then! Call in and say Hi as you're passing!
 
Betws-y-Coed is a great place to be based for driving round Snowdonia, you also got the North Wales Coast not far away also Conwy and the castle and Anglesey.
As Alan has said Pembrokeshire has a great coastline and secluded bays.
Here's a few from between Christmas and new year which gives you a bit of an idea of Snowdonia, didn't really plan a route just drove and admired the wonder.

North Wales.....you have everything in easy reach. Mounains, lakes, seaside, towns..You couldn't go wrong again staying in Betwys as you would be about an hours drive from most of those things...
 
Anywhere in the Snowdonia NP and you will be spoilt for choice, also you will be able to visit the mach loop if your other half doesn't mind sitting on a mountain side all day doing nothing. ;)
 
Stayed just outside of Bangor a couple of years back, easy for Snowdonia, Anglesey, Colwyn Bay, Caerarvon Castle & various Welsh Steam Railway Stations - good selection for photography and family interest :)
 
I only know one place well, Porthmadog at the coast, go through Snowdonia way, very pretty all round, massive tidle estuary splatterings of flat green islands at low tide and montains in the background... its got the ffestiniog railway too, but its worth noting its has non or very few clear views during the journey from spring growth onwards.
 
i live just off the A55 and overlook the dee estuary ,the whole of the north end of wales is photogenic ,are you planning to b&b ,hotel camping or caravan that could affect where to stay advise a bit
 
Elan Valley area is very scenic with the dams, Hafren Forest and the River Severn Walk just outside Llanidloes
 
Did you watch griff rhys jones great welsh adventures last night? Not sure it was broadcast everywhere it was in wales, andi'm sure you will find it on itvplayer.
 
Anywhere in Wales has great potential..

Coastal photography.. Pembrokeshire, Isle of Anglesey, Llyn peninsula

Mountains.. Snowdonia, Brecon beacons

Staying somewhere like Beddgelert places you in an ideal spot of some great coastal and mountain photography

Ruthin and the Vale of Clwyd are worthy of a mention, and Horseshoe Pass. Llangollen Railway.

You can get all of this in Gwynedd/Ynys Môn (Anglesey) ...

There are plenty of nice camping spots around Northern Snowdonia that you could check out. Betws-y-Coed, as you've said, it a great spot! Llanberis has various B&Bs, hotels and holiday homes nearby. It is a very central location if you want to go out and explore the mountains and surrounding areas.
 
I would second Llanberis as a good location for North Wales, an hour in any direction gets you to some wonderful locations.
