Where does everyone keep their equipment

Some of it's kept in a Vertex 300 under my desk and the rest of it is spread around the flat... Unfortunately, I can't fit it all in the Vertex so it's all safely cased up and stuck in out-of-the-way corners (most of the time). :)

Kit is generally in a Storm case, wooden box, Thinktank bag and a Tamrac bag or in the belt system under the bed, tripods & light stands, brollies etc. generally live in the boot of the car as I'm too lazy to cary them in all the time and don't forget to them when I need them ;)

I actually feel pretty secure at home as my neighbour is a Police Dog Handler and not only has 3 dogs in his kennels but parks his works motor on the drive when not on duty, the reflection off the battenburg and the DOG UNIT stickers are the first thing you see when you drive up the road at night.

As for backup, everything is duplicated to a portable HDD which I do unplug and put away in a draw, though that wouldn't be much help in case of a fire.

Between our bedroom and the office, at the wife's insistence, we have 4 handguns and a sawn off shotgun, all loaded
Well, someone has to teach the kids a lesson when the break curfew. ;)

Camera is all over the room. With my whole 9 sqm it isn't very hard to find. Burglars are well repelled by general lack of money. Although some drunk girl tried to steal my water-bottle from my messenger-bag today.

The home studio gear would take to many trips :D the proper stuff is in a Peli case chained to a German Shepherd that doesn't like strangers .......and all the important internal doors have dead bolts.

now you're being silly
Heh - sorry. Ok, the stuff I'm using frequently is in bag on the floor, the rest of it in a set of drawers.

Guess this is another subject but to me the most valuable thing is the backup hard drive. That is irreplaceable. So now I'm thinking of having 2 of them and keep one in a different location.
I totally agree - I have a copy of my main photo folder on my second computer syncing via syncpal, and then another copy of it all on a portable 2.5" drive.

On my floor in bags - already not all of my kit will fit in my bag unless stupidly tightly packed!

I have my brother and dad, both 6+ and a 80lb or so, very protective golden retriever, any burgler with an ounce of sense will run.

And rats by the look of it, hope the burglar is wearing shoes or the'll be drawing blood!

(my old rats loved feet for some reason, I miss them :()

I've seen a few people on here do that, to be honest i wouldn't know where else to put another hard drive, could take it to my brothers i guess, but then when/if i need it, it just means i have to go around there, i honestly think their may be a bit of paranoia surrounding things like this, if something is going to happen it's going to happen, but that's just my take on it :)

i keep a hard drive (well actually 2) on my desk at work.

what is it people say, if you had to grab 1 thing in a fire what would it be. photos are irreplacable in the morning when you phone the insurance..

even if its just archiving off to dvd every time you add new photos then do it. be prepared if/when the worst happens.

if its that important get a fire safe to store the backups in.

for the price of the safe (plus normally they're only good for 30 mins in a fire) its easier to take media off site in my opinion.

good in theory but most home based people just don't have anywhere to take the backup or the time - £150 ish gets you a waterproof fire safe that will give you 1 hour protection which is plenty in a residential house, and the added benefit's of a safe.

Camera bag in whichever room takes my fancy that night.

Like Marcusp13 says, there are more important things that could get stolen, although I would miss my gear dearly until the cheque came through to buy a new set ;)

who knows where most of it is, not been very carefull with it in days of late, i think theres even some lenses under my car seat XD i dont know where i would have to look to find my spare battery now, or even the charger for that matter!

if anyone could let me know where my camera is i would be eternally grateful!!!

Mine is left on the kitchen table with examples of photos I have taken with it to deter the thieves! :D

I think those fire safes are bit of an oxymoron. In the event of a fire.. would you seriously stop to get your backup hdd out whilst getting yourself and loved ones out. 1hr protection is pretty useless if your house gets burnt to a crisp!

My gear was always lying around, sometimes hanging precariously of the ironing board. till the mrs got fed up and moved it all behind the baby's nappy bin as a form of punishment. turns out its actually quite a good storage place because I doubt any burglar would even begin rummaging around there after my little un's done a few :razz:

Your missing the point.........

You store your backup media in the safe,
the house burns to a crisp and all thats left is the firesafe sitting in the ruins of your house, which you then open to retrieve your backup media, passports, birth certificates etc.

i understand, but if the safe only gives you 1hr protection?

I bought an iPod Classic 160GB and store a duplicate of my backup on it. Since it literally never leaves my pocket, it's a pretty sound method. I haven't placed the latest copy of my backup on it for a few months right enough, but it's still a hell of a lot better than nothing.

In a cupboard when I'm at home.

Security for my cameras is provided by my dog and wife !

1 hour in a constant temperature of 1700 Deg , longer if cooler - plenty of time for the house to have burnt to the ground or the fire brigade to have put out the fire.

Mine is all over the place in various bags, the last time I remember it all being together in one place it was in the kitchen in a pile after a photoshoot, this was also the day I got burgled.... thankfully they didn't come upstairs and my insurance paid out.... eventually!

im with you

one thing to note about fire safes, quite a lot of the ones ive looked at this morning state they should not be used to store plastic media.. i guess the safe gets hot and there is risk of cd/dvd/bd melting. anyone concidering a fire safe, check this before purchasing.

My boyfreinds Dog has a thing for cameras. I should make him guard it.

As Neil Say's there's different types, paper , media etc and some even have a usb connection on the outside allowing you to have a PC connected all the time. something like this is fine for home use

By amazing coincidence this a thread I started yesterday

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=243351

Ha-ha …I saw your post Footman but glass cabinet exhibiting it all was not what I had in mind. I was thinking more along the lines of secure storage. More out of sight out of mind perhaps. Still nothing is totally secure and just how far does one go. As a few people have said, there are worse things that could be lost or stolen and as long as everyone is safe that's the main thing.

I think there it’s a fair bit of underestimation of what thieves will get up to. The front of most of them is amazing i.e. they will come in even when you are at home. People have mentioned dogs, I have heard of dogs being fed a nice steak as bribery ;) The policemen that came to me told me of a guy carrying a safe off down the road. Another report I heard of a thief that had got the car keys from the house but he car wouldn’t start ..he was out the front with the bonnet up!

This is getting to be a bit of an issue for me. I have two sofas; a two-seater for sitting on and a three-seater, which is half covered with camera bags, lens cases, flash guns and little peripherals :D. I tend to try my hand at lots of different genres of photography and change my (camera ;)) kit pretty much every time I go out. Consequently, I tend to be lazy about packing everything into bags again once I've finished, as I only have to empty them all again to find what I'm looking for next time :(.

What I would really like (although it can wait until I get back to living in England, the home of lawlesness :D, again), is a decent metal cabinet with a strong lock. A safe, at least the affordable domestic ones, wouldn't be anywhere near big enough and if I had one big enough, it would probably cost far too much .

Does anyone (Rob?) know of any suppliers of these kind of cabinets, so that I could have a look at what's available, please ?

At the moment I keep my gear in a steel filing cabinet in my study. It's locked but wouldn’t be a great deal to open it. Could beef it up a bit and then to my mind it would be better than a safe as you certainly cannot carry it off. Plus it's a good size.

do you not go to work every day?

I know people may think this is silly, but my first line off-site backups are in the car! I have two external hard drives (3.5") that rotate, one sits on top of the PC getting backed up, and the other is in a little peli case under the seat of the car. We sync the one inside at the end of each day and rotate them.

It seems very unlikely that something will simultaneously destroy the house (where our office is) and the car at the same time.

As for gear, everything is packed in think tank rucksacks, unless it is lacking something (charged batteries, clean glass, etc) then it's on a shelf with a little sticker on it say what it needs.

Only to find that your house has been burning for two hours and you have been left with some nice ash for the roses. Which turn out to have been trampled by the fire brigade.
