I am buying my 1st and 2nd lenses today, which would be the best to go with? I am looking to do portaits, weddings & outside shots. See signature for specs.

Looking at a nifty 50.

Budget is important!

Whilst the Nifty is cheap and an excellent lens, i think you would be better off with an "allrounder", something like a 24-70.

the 50mm does work well for portriats but for outside work you may want to go a little wider at times..
 
My budget is about $400 US.

Sigma 17-70mm Its not the fastest lens but is still quite capable.
I dont think your budget will allow for much faster with a similar focal range.
 
I see, I just checked the price on that sucker.
