I assume you mean it being slightly overexposed and blowing the sky? I am not familiar with your camera, so don't know what the fastest shutter speed is, but if it is only 1/1000 sec, which is what the picture was taken at, it's not fast enough.

Shooting in Av mode, as you were, and at a selected aperture of 2.8, which is going to let a lot of light in on a bright sunny day, the camera is going to need to be able to pick a suitably fast shutter speed to get the exposure right. If 1/1000 is indeed the best your camera can do, you were asking it to do the impossible when you selected such a wide aperture.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 and I don't know what the fastest shutter speed is either :) Exif says the aperture was f2.8, so if 1/1000 is the highest, stop the lens down, say f8

the fastest shutter speed is 1/2000 but I do believe that drops to 1/1000 in Manual, god knows why...

Thanks guys f2.8 was silly for that sence on a suuny day should have gone to specsavers

Don't sweat it, we have and still do it... ahem.... from time to time :)

Amen to that!

Two things I've been guilty of in the past is leaving my camera in a specific WB mode and/or high ISO and forgetting the next time I start shooting :bonk:

To counter this I tend to put if into Av/Tv mode before I turn it off and set the ISO to 400. I also shoot in RAW and leave the WB in auto unless I'm shooting something very specific.

Exif Data:

  • F Number 2.8
  • Exposure Program Aperture priority

  • Exposure Bias -0.33
  • Metering Mode Pattern
  • Flash Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
  • Focal Length 6.3
  • White Balance Auto white balance
  • Make Panasonic
  • Model DMC-LX2

You dialled in .33 (1/3 stop) exposure bias, when you could have done with a bit more, may 2/3 or even a whole stop.

The other thing though is that you were taking what is a "landscape" style shot at f2.8. You should really be pushing the aperture smaller, say 5.6, even with the small processor in your Lumix.

This seems like a pretty reasonable answer.

The other mistake was not checking your exposure at the time - quick glance at the LCD would show that the sky was blown out.

Is that the harbour beside Albufeira?
