Where did all these .XMP files come from?

Can anyone shed any light on all these files I have on my hard drive. They seem to relate one to one with Canon Raw and JPG files?
I used to use Picasa2 during the period these were shot and have since got rid of it, could it be Picasa's doing? I'd like to just bulk delete the lot.

you can covert your files to dng and all that processing info is self contained in the file.
i use dng for that reason :thumbs:
 
XMP's are a pain in the arse 90% of the time imo. Just makes a mess!
 
Another vote for the DNGs here, no more XMPs getting in the way...

So can I assume the original RAW images are unmolested?
This XMP 'side file' is created by whatever RAW editing software you are using or a specific one?

Can someone give me a link that would enable me to dig a little deeper before I get rid.

I guess I should search the forums for DNG too ***' I will probably get masses of hits.

shoshone, yes, RAW files use non-destructive editing to make adjustments to levels etec, that's why all the data of changes are saved a a.XMP sidecar file.
