Yes
I am looking to hire a camera for a weekend but I don't want to spend a fortune doing it (otherwise I'd be better saving to buy)!

I am looking to hire a 7D or a 5D MkII. This would cost about £120ish + £50ish postage from Hireacamera which seems pretty pricey but not extremely obscene I guess but you also have to pay insurance.

Am I likely to find it anywhere cheaper?

Probably not; that sounds about on the money.

Fixation is £60pd + VAT + 10% Ins.

I think at that money, I'd buy second hand and sell when done with it, might cost you less than nothing
I bought my camera on gumtree and over the moon with the deal and was bought with the plan B of selling it if I never got the bug....... As if
I think I'd easy get my money back tomorrow tho

check calumet, a 7D seems to be £90 a day, a 5DmkII £100, both + VAT, but you can hire from friday afternoon til monday morning for the cost of a single day. However, they do expect a substantial deposit, usually about the value of the equipment on a credit card with that amount available on it. :|

Yeah, I'm not willing to do the crazy deposit option. I'd rather use somewhere that takes out its own insurance against that sort of thing!

Outright buying is tempting but I've been trying to be good with money recently :p.

If its any consolation, the insurance is only against you not returning with the camera, damages and the like are covered by their insurance and you get your deposit back, so they do one of those reserved transactions, whatever you call them, like when you buy something on line, its noted against your card, but not actually taken until the item is despatched. Still a hefty bloody lump though :(

Outright buying isn't really being bad with money as long as you have the will power to sell it again

I recently hired a camera from Fixation & if you pick it up after mid-day on the friday & get it back to them monday morning you only pay for one days hire.
You will have to leave a deposit with your credit card the 1st. time you hire from them but they will cancel it when you return it so it shouldn't come out of your account.

I have hired cameras from other companies some time ago & this was also the case with them regarding weekend hire.:)

Stew.

The flash centre have great rental rates, but do take the value of the deposit off a credit card and refund it upon return. I personally see it as the best option, plus you can rent some pretty awesome gear that would be impractical to buy and resell.
