One thing you will need to check when using extension tubes with a lens without a manual aperture ring; I think Nikon lenses have the aperture closed when not mounted on a body, so you might need to find a way to keep it open when using extension tubes. I'm sure I remember a friend's Nikon lenses having little slider tabs on the lens mount for controlling aperture.
