Hi all,

I love taking macro shots of bugs. The only problem is that we recently moved house, and my back garden pretty much has no bugs here, apart from the odd ant or two. So i was wondering, where in brum can i go to see some bugs? I have also never come across a dragonfly or damselfly and i'm dying to see one.

Any ideas would be great, i live in Aston by the way, a bus ride away from the city centre. Thanks

Hi

I look everywhere and anywhere often they are quite small and well camouflaged, open fields meadows, for bees wasps butterflies moths, grasshoppers, flies, and woods are all good areas for creepy crawlies, as for dragonflies and Damosels and damselfly, they are about yet another month or so then look on ponds and rivers HTHs

Grow some plants in your back garden. If you can - try to grow an ivy bush on your wall. Over time, it will become full of bugs.

There's plenty of good nature reserves around Birmingham.
Like others have said, meadows are great places as well. Generally look for somewhere with lots of weeds, things like nettles and dandelions are great for insects.
If you drive a bit out of birmingham there's plenty of rich countryside with lots of public footpaths overgrown with weeds and vegetation, which is perfect.

One place I go quite regularly is Brandon Marsh WWT reserve. Depending on where you are in Birmingham it might be a bit of a drive, but it's got lots of pools and varied meadow and grassland habitats. Great for dragonflies. I've seen Common darters, black tailed skimmers, migrant hawkers, southern hawkers, brown hawkers and broad bodied chasers there and they get many more species.
I also know a spot there that's great for banded and beautiful demoiselles later in the year, which are very photogenic species.

Another good place I go for dragonflies is the new Middleton Lakes RSPB reserve. Again, not sure how much of a drive it will be from Birmingham, it's about half an hour from Solihull.

It's a long time since I lived near Birmingham, but all cities have parks. I would check out your local parks. There will always be something interesting to photograph, you just have to search. Buy a good nature guide.
eg "Small Woodland Creatures" by Olsen, Sunesen and Pedersen Pub. Oxford Nuniversity Press

The Collins Book "Wildlife in House and Home". I assume this is still in print. I've just checked and I bought my copy in 1982

Thanks for all the replies guys! Unfortunately i dont drive, im currently learning, and might be a while till i get a car, the flippin' insurance prices are crazy.

I will definitely take into account the advice, and maybe once i get a car i can drive around and find some good spots.

From aston you must be able to get pretty much anywhere in Birmingham by bus/train - just head anywhere like a park with a pond.

Just a matter of knowing where to go latercomer2. :)

Dont know Birmingham that well as I only stayed there (near solihull) for 3 years but just a quick look at google maps shows thers is Aston park (presumably not far away), Edgbaston park and reservoir shoudln't be more than a short bus ride away.

and what about the canal - comes in from the East side and ends just right near the centre.. anything with water is usually a good source of bugs:
