Yes
I want to take some rig shots but don't have any of the rig equipment, or any idea of a good uk-based resource for info and hardware (rigshots.com.au is good but aus based). To begin with I only want to do partial shots, so I don't need massive boom arms or multiple weapons-grade suction cups, just a simple-but-sturdy suction cup inc vacuum gauge with a short (1'-2') arm and some way to mount a camera.

Any ideas?

You could save some money and buy these: -

then some of these:-

and use your tripod like this:-

To get shots like this:-

Total Cost, about £10-12

Thanks very much Dal, that is an excellent idea!

Thats an absolute cracking idea. Was it difficult to clamp the tripod to the glass clamps securely? I shall have to try this! Need insurance for my gear first though I think! lol

The thing u need to watch is that you don't scratch the paint on the tripod. Also, make sure the suction cups are clean.

Why do u need insurance for your gear to do this?

How fast do u think the car needs to be moving? If it's faster than walking pace then it's too fast. Most people push the car to avoid camera shake.

I don't let go of the neck strap during the exposure. Just make sure the suction cups have a decent seal.

Where did you source the suction handles? I've had a look on-line and the cheapest I've seen so far is £20 each (going up to £70 depending on how much load you need to lift).

Cheers

To be honest I haven't read tooo much in to it yet, just a bit of light reading on rigshots.com.au.

I take it an ND filter is necessary for daytime shots?

The suction cups on the Subaru are from B&Q and are used for carrying sheet metal or glass and are £ 5 each. The clamps are exhaust clamps and can be bought from exhaust shops or motor factors for under £ 1 each.

The suction cups really like flat surfaces but don't like curved sections.

i have made a rig jsut like this, but with a ali pole and my tripod centre pole at 80 degs to the end, so i can get some height adjsutment

im in contact with metal supermarket at the mo, seeing if they can suply 2m lenghts of ali that will fit inside one another so i can extent range

i put my rig on my window last night, with some weight on it and it was still there this morning, so now i trust it :D

i got the suckers from screwfix for £4.60 i think, the pole was from there too, but its very limp when fully extended, id recomend using tripod to start with, then getting a proper ali tube

B&Q is the place to be!

I would recommend some rubber to wrap around the tripod legs (straight lenghts of car heater hose can be sliced lengthways, and to replace the nuts on the exhaust clamps with wing nuts which can be easily tightened with fingers.

However, glass is fragile for abnormal loads and metal can bend so take care!

i took the centre pole out from my red snaper tripod and taped it to the end, then used a ball head on the tripod head :D

oh and my result, more to come im processing them now

Dal & Saxk - you are the gods of DIY :notworthy:

I have stored your solution away for a weekend when I'm bored

Thanks for the idea

lol, king of bodge :D

but in all fairness, for a few shots here and there i ddint really want to spent £200 on parts.

i will begetting a bigger pole so i can get the entire car in shot though.

give it ago mate, great fun, im doing a black lexus is200 tomorrow i hope

Perhaps one of the mods can add 'king of bodge' to your avatar stuff ;)

Completely agree about spending serious wedge though-I tend to get bored from time to time and little projects like this get my interest back.

I dunno about king of DIY lol, I got some help off a member on here a while back.

I still don't know how Saxk is fixing the camera to his other than maybe a 'magic arm'.

Are you a member on SXOC aswell?? Nice looking S14a there

I've just ordered basically the same setup as you, and been sat picking my brain to shreds on how to fix the camera to the pole, without buying Manfrotto clamps etc and spending £30+. Never thought about taking the center out of my tripod.

Legend.

Will give it a go when they turn up mid-week.

Shot's good fella, looking forward to seeing more.

hey dal, i am a member yes, i had a red 200sx then my mate got one, i sold mine to fund a saxo track car and he kept his.

sorry i didnt mention that i im using my redsnapper centre arm taped to the end of the pole, more bodgeidisation :D

You got msn fella? I'm quite handy with photoshop, don't mind giving you a helping hand if you're stuck.

I'm Daz on there. Got a Damson S14a.

You sold a 200 to buy a Saxo, you should be shot lol.

Nice idea with the centre pole, I dunno if it's worse that I missed the post about it or that you forgot about it lol.

haha i know dal, were both useless.

well my saxo is not much of a saxo, it has a saxo shell and a very modded VTS engine thats about as far as it goes.

ill post pics on day, but its not very pretty with its perspex windows and carbon bonnet etc

Another SXOC member here, not on much anymore though, sold mine in September 07. Loved it.
