Hi,

As the title says - where can I buy a roll of sheet diffuser material?

I want to start doing some outdoor portraiture but I don't have any diffusers and the sky light diffusers you can buy seem really expensive, so I'm thinking of making my own.

Cheers,

I'd hit a fabric warehouse if I were you..... maybe just be careful of odd colour casts from the material.

The Dean Collins' Tinker Tubes book is no longer a free download (there's a sample page); he used a vinyl material called Soft Frost but rip-stop etc is way cheaper (though rip-stop would be too noisy, outdoors, if sound needed to be recorded...). Wedding dress makers are also rumoured to have something suitable.

Hi Duncan

Having tried all of the materials mentioned above, and more, my favourite is white horticultural fleece. It’s sold by the metre, it’s dead cheap and it’s light and easy to use and store, plus being thin a single layer will give you a just a touch of diffusion and then just double it up as much as you like to increase the light softening effect. Horticultural fleece can be bought at most big garden centres and DIY stores, but it’s generally used in winter to protect plants from frost, so you might need to ask around. To see what the stuff looks like, take a gander at the second picture down on this link......

Or PM me your address and I will send you a small sample.

Good tip, Sam-D. It's in stock at my local Poundland.
