A fortnight ago I decided that a new laptop was on the cards, I decided on a MacBook pro. I ordered it through AO.com. It arrived last Friday and all was good until a message popped up saying there were 4 updates for Big Sur, I downloaded the updates, re-booted the laptop......and nothing, zilch, nowt. I contacted AO who advised me to call Apple. After 4 attempts by Apple to get it going they decided that a new replacement machine would be sent out to me, it arrived this morning YAY!! ...turned it on.......and the courser wouldn't move, I called Apple and again they tried to resolve it but failed....3rd laptop going to be delivered on Saturday.

There was a time when Apple was a device that did what it did very well. Now they're just as flaky as a Windows based pc but cost much more. Hope you get it sorted on the 3rd one.

Big (Bleedin') Sur has done the brand no favours. We aren't going to use it here until they get their act together. :tumbleweed:

seems the way also it just seems to be so all about the brand for young social media hipsters

I used to fix apple stuff a long time ago and the build quality was exceptional. It's sad to think they've moved away from the killer blend of innovation and build quality they once had.

i think there hardware is quite good to be fair and it still is, its there software that seems to be starting to suck.

(not so much now)eagerly awaiting the delivery of MacBook number 3, if this one goes tits..... that's it, I'll get another brand.

My son in law (software developer/programmer) has been loyal to Apple for at least 15 years, but he's pretty scathing about the build quality on his latest MacBook.

I've never owned or used anything made by Apple, partly because I've never been in a position to afford it! OTOH, I bought a Sony Vaio in 2010 and it's still going strong on a daily basis. I replaced the HDD with an SSD last year, and that's the only component that's been changed. Thought about upgrading the 4 GB RAM to 8GB, but I'm not convinced it's worth it to me.

I’m having real problems with installing that on my iMac at the moment, I wish I’d stuck with Catalina or whatever the last one was

I am stuck on Catalina thankfully .. hearing lots of glitches with big sur

nearly 24 hours with MacBook number 3 and still working OK............................that's put the kybosh on it.

it is OS11, so a big jump from OSX. Not ideal to have glitches, but the history of OSs across the board is one of ‘avoid the first releases’.

hardware vs software.

I’ve had two annoying new machine failures, 17” MBP 10 years ago and G5 tower 16 years ago. Otherwise my machines have made it through many years and been sold for a good residual value. Mind you, when my G5 was playing up, there were dozens of complaints on the Apple Discussions. Tens of thousands of people weren’t complaining, though.

I've updated my iMac to Big Sur and it's been fine (that will put the kiss of death on it now!).

I only have one machine on MacOS Big Sur and that's my M1 MBA
The iMac is still on Majave as I still need 32bit support for certain apps.
My MBP is on Catalina as it's a mid 2012 model and won't run Big Sur very well, if at all.

That’s the problem with mine I think they have to be post 2014 to work ,mines high spec but 2013
