When you first got into DSLR photography...

Did you start of with just the camera or kit lens or did you go mad and buy a lot of kit?
In my case the first purchase consisted of Canon 450D + kit lens, 4gb sd card, Tamron 7-300 lens and a Lowpro slingshot 200W bag.
A few days later I bought a Canon 'nifty fifty' then yesterday my tripod arrived.
I also want to upgrade the kit lens to something better, a 100mm macro lens and a waterproof cover so I can use the camera in light rain.
My other half has asked me to slow down on purchasing additional kit.
I understand what she is saying as I should learn to get the best out of my exisiting kit.
I am so interested in learning about photography that I am finding that all my free spare time is now dedicated to either reading about photography, or experimenting with various types of photo shots.

I've never been obsessive with a hobby but I just find it highly addictive and fascinating.
 
I got a D40, nifty fifty, filters, memory cards and bag on my first purchase. Then a few days later a 55-200 :D It's addictive.
 
I started off with 40D, 20 and 50mm lenses. Within a month I'd added battery grip, 100mm macro and 200mm lenses and recently added a second 40D. I'm hoping that's it for now.
 
I started off with my Nikon D80 and 18-70 kit lens. Still have both as it wasn't that long ago that I purchased it. Also now got a sigma 10-20 and nifty 50, sb800, various filters, bag and tripod. This is since the start in late feb so a fair amount of gear in my eyes. Oh and forgot about the grip lol.
 
I bought a 400D and 50mm f1.8 first up with a sandisk 2gb CF card, that lasted about a week before I bought a 70-200 f4 L and a 430EX flashgun.

Then about another week after that, I bought a ticket to Australia, so thought a 10-22 would come in handy for those vast landscapes (which I'm yet to get out and see :D). Along with a mini tripod thing.

All those lenses I bought Hoya pro 1 UV filters for, and a polariser with the nifty. So I guess that was a pretty big outlay up front.

In the 17 months since then, I've bought an EOS 3 and some film and paper, and a developing tank. I think I scared myself :D Saying that, a 24-70 and 5D are firmly in my sights now..

Damn hobbies.

EDIT: Oh yeah, got a couple of bags, and a set of Cokin filters too.. Though the Cokins came much later.

Went out looking for a 450d. Came back with a 40d! The 17-85 came with it. Added the Tamron 70-300 because it was cheap when included. Picked up a battery grip a few days later because I liked the weight of the camera with it. A couple of uv filters. Few days later got an extra battery. Next day, a Lowepro 200 aw to put it all in.
Just added a 'fifty' 1.8 today.:) (Luckily still have a tripod & half decent studio light set from my film slr days.)

Addictive?......Photography remains the only fully legal class 'A' drug I know. When are the government going to take action?!! :help:
 
The girlfriend convinced me to spend some of my hard earned on a cam so plumped for the Sony A100 with twin lens kit (18-70 & 75-300). Got a HVL-56F flash when a relative visited New York last year. Was happy enough with kit lenses until I came into a bit of cash a couple of months ago and treat myself to the Zeiss 16-80, a Sony 70-300G and a Sigma 15mm Fisheye. Then saw a bargain 50 f1.4 on ebay and a guy at work had a Sigma 10-20 he was selling for next to nothing, so it's been a busy couple of months! Oh, and i won a studio lighting kit in April that i've yet to get the best out of.

I've now got kit that goes way beyond my ability, nowhere to store it and it's probably worth around four times as much as the car I drive!

UV filters, polarising filters, graduated filters, cokin-styled filters
tripod legs and head

never ending accessories accumulating, and still growing...
Some with more direct affect on the images, some to make it easier while shooting, some a waste of money.

bye bye money fly away.

I spend more time looking at gear than taking photographs until I realise that I should go out and use the gear.
 
Just googled 'golf clubs' and the first UK site had on their fromt page a golf club for £322. most were £100-£200, so say you need 10 clubs =£2000, a bag=£100, shoes=£50, a couple of pairs of loud check trousers =£100, trolley-£150

All this comes to around £2,400.

Checked on club fees , an average subscription for example West Cornwall golf club is £490.


So over 5 years the total outlay would be around £5,000

Compare that to say adamadam's list of equipment, which is probably not untypical over a 5 year period, I reckon his total cost is in the region of £2,500, so around half of a golfers layout, and you don't have to walk around in silly trousers.

So compared to another popular 'hobby' we don't come out so badly, and I reckon if we compared it to other pastimes/hobbies (apart from perhaps trainspoting) then the cost is not unreasonable.

Lol, some of you make my initial purchase comparable to a bucket of KFC and a gourmet meal at a michelin star resturant.
I no longer feel the pain of my bank account, thank you :D
 
I've got into photography in April I think, bought th Nikon D40 & kit lens...then I was going on safari so got a 70-300 Nikon VR and a ****** tripod to go with it, now thinking about a nifty fifty, tripod and a bag to fit it all - but pushing myself not to spend it just yet as I might need the money in the future, duunnnnoo *** to do!!

How are you enjoying that 50 on the D40?

I bought a D60 with 18-55 and a 55-200. Bag the same day. Spare battery the next week along with a tripod. 1.5 weeks in I got a 50mm f/1.8. About a month in, the SB600 flash. Then I got a D80 which I'm loving but hard to give up the D60. Next week I'm planning on a grip and a Sigma 10-20. Recently an IR filter but UV filters have been bought when I bought the lenses. Somewhere in the middle I got a Raynox 250 and a wireless remote.

I'm going to now also need a travel bag as the Lowepro slingshot 100aw is good for short day trips to the city but I'm going to need a bigger one for my trip to Turkey :)

This is a nice hobby, in addition to guitars and computers. Those seem to be damn expensive too though ;)

it all started last july....was in cornwall on hols with the missus and a mate and his better half.he had just purchased a sony alpha 100 with the kit lens and the 75-300,and one day we decided to go for a walk around trevose head whilst the wifes sunned themselves on the campsite...him with his siny,and me with my kodak P+S.after a few hours,we arrived back and compared images...wow,what a difference,so i got myself the A 100 on my return home...

only really used it on auto,as i didn't have a clue on how to use the settings,then i registered on here after coming across the forums whilst searching for some info...and met taxi,another member that only lived a few hundred yards away.started to go out with him and started to understand the settings etc etc...then came the next part...the addictive buying.

as i said..started off with the A100 and kit lens,plus the 75-300 and cheap tripod,then i upgraded my tripod to the 190XPROB,got myself the remote plus some cokin filters,then came the mini trekker to put it all in,then spare battery,105 macro,kenko extension tubes,50mm F1.7 sigma 17-70,sony flash....then i upgraded to the alpha 350,then got the battery grip within a week...next is either the sigma 100-300 F4 or the 70-200 F2.8 G sony...

adictive...nah :lol:
 
Didn't buy another lens for 18 months after getting my first DSLR. Just carried on using all the ones I already had for my F65 and F80...

I know exactly how this feels, I am in the same position.

I took my first steps in this hobby by buying a 400D twin lens kit (400D 18-55mm, 55-200mm and battery grip) and a Lowepro Orion Trekker bag, and three weeks later, added a 70-300mm IS lens, and a Lowepro Fastpack 350 (feeling that the Orion was too small).

Since then, I have only added a nifty fifty, but I am now looking at getting a 100-400mm lens, and a 40D, and putting the twin lens kit I originally purchased on ebay, and getting something back.
 
I got the Sony Alpha 200. I already Had a Minolta 75 -300 mm lens so That saved money. I bought a 4Gig card Tripod Battery Grip and a case on first purchase.
 
My 'first day' shopping list was the Canon 400D with kit lens, a CF card and a freebie bag from Jessops. I went back a day or two later and bought a polarising filter, a remote switch and a tripod. eBay provided me with a slightly bigger/better bag a couple of weeks ago and a nifty50 was bought as well. A few days before going on holiday I ordered a cheapo set of filters, a larger CF card and a memory card reader. I also decided I wanted another lens so a 55-250IS was added to the collection. Oddly enough, when on holiday the kit lens stayed on the camera for 95% of the time. :lol: I've decided not to buy any more stuff until I've learnt to, properly, use the stuff I've got. Next purchase will be a 10-20 though. :)
 
I got in to photography with a Nikon F80 which I had for a year before going digital. My first DSLR was a D100 and I got it with a 2gig Sandisk card (which a bargain on sale at £200 lol) and used them with my kit lens from the F80 for quite a while before I started to upgrade my way through to where I am now.
 
When I started with a dslr [having used film in a previous life] I started with an Entry level Nikon and a 18-70 kit lens - both are still in use today, despite adding a pro-sumer body and some quite expensive glass over the last couple of years, particularly the last 6 months. IN fact occurred to me the other day - a year or so ago I made a list of the sort of lenses I wanted and earlier this week I bought the final installment on that list from a member here and it was quite strange realising that I had fulfilled my wish list lens wise. :eek: [for now ;) ]
 
Always remember what you buy today, is history tomorrow.
 
I started with a 300D and a Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 and I've always thought it was an amazing combo :)
 
I started with a bundle from one of the shops I visited, It was the D50 with 18-55 and a 70-300 Nikon lens, plus extra battery and 2gig card with wrist grip strap.

Did me proud until I upgraded to the D80, if I had been thinking straight I would have kept it as it is a cracking camera for the money.

I started with a Used Nikon D200, and 18-70mm lens, I've held of any big purchases and am saving like crazy for a Nikkor 300mm 2.8 lens!

I was sooo close to having a used D200. But this way I have something to look forward to! Can't wait until the D300 falls in price! :)
 
I started off with a Fuji S5700 bought as a birthday present - a great little camera.

Within a few months I decided to upgrade to a DSLR and went for the Canon 40D with 17-85mm kit lens and filters. I had already been given an EF 28-90 mm lens and recently decided to add a Canon 55-200 mm lens - which i carry about in a Tamrac Expedition 4 back pack.

I think that when your starting out (like me) you want to have and try everthing and see what they do, the differances between them
,and the ones get on with then when you know what sort of photos you take more often than not you can (gulp) sell the ones you dont use or like and refine what you need .

Thats my way of thinking and if you can afford it at the time why not but not if your going to get in dept big time its madness ! (girlfriend made me put that last bit in :D)

hmmmm that sounds a bit too familier :lol::lol:

what got me into this? Its because of my love for F1 I'm afraid - the compact point and shoot we had was, frankly, useless when it came to trying to get pics of race cars what with the woefully short zoom and the shutter lag time. Started out with a D50 and a couple of kit lenses, but I soon found the limits of the lenses so they got replaced. That meant I was finding the limits of the D50, so a D300 has arrived more recently, only thats now showing up the limits of the lenses..............

So far, I've not taken the plunge to upgrade the lenses again - but thats only because I can't afford to :bang: :(

I'm a devout Maclaren fan and you can probably guess which driver I am rooting for in the championship :D

I've always favoured the home guy, and am a Williams fan at heart, some on another forum I'm involved with would call me an anti Ferrari fan, so I reckon there'll be no arguements between us over the desired winner for this year :woot: :woot:
