Hi guys,

i've been using a Canon 60D with a 10-20mm sigma lens for years now. Only for a hobby but my instagram is approaching 10k and feel I should up my game soon, no paid stuff etc though currently.

I mainly shoot car stuff indoors and trackside and find I get quite a lot of noise with indoor shows. Currently using 10-20mm sigma as its wider but then its F4/F5 (using crop body 60D). I have been looking at getting an older 5D MkII (again as its a hobby I don't want to spend £1000s) paired with maybe a 24-70 F2.8.

Would going from a 60D to a 5D Mkii be a good improvement as i'm aware both are getting on now but my 60D is in such good condition. I'de obviously sell my 60D and 10-20mm sigma along with my Sigma 18-50mm F2.8. (I have tried using this at car shows but 18mm doesn't seem wide enough on a crop body.

Thanks,
Beav

A 60D with a 10-20 will be a wider angle than a 5D with a 24-70.

A 5D with a 24-70 will only be fractionally be wider than a 60D with an 18-50.

You'll need a 5D with a 16-35 or 17-40. Like for like the 5D will have the less noisy image due to pixel density but they both run the Digic 4 image processor.

The 5D2 isn’t great by today’s standards in terms of noise handling, but isn’t bad and is better than the 60d. On top of that you’ve a stop extra light gathering using f2.8 rather than f4. How much are used 5D3’s compared to used 5D2’s as you’d see big improvements all round with the 5D3.

If you have just the 60D and 10-20mm why stick to Canon? You could look at other things and let the world be your oyster.

You could even look at mirrorless kit.

Doesn’t have a great AF system, but noise handling‘s pretty good and so is IQ

Awkward being a hobbyist as I can't justify spending £1000 on a body alone. Should be an upgrade on a 60D though? Seen a few 6D bodies for £370-£400

Woofwoof I would love to go Sony or even full frame but it's mega money. I have a 70-200mm f4 as well but I didn't mention that as I can use it on full frame

Ask yourself how many of your 10k Instagram followers\likers would even notice or recognise that you were using a newer allegedly better camera.
This is a very good point.

OP if you’re looking at upgrading purely for insta then I’d say don’t bother, you’re just not going to see enough difference on photos taking up less than the screen size of your phone. However, if you just fancy a new toy or it’s for yourself to enjoy the images then that’s a different matter (y)

Justification is a tough one and we all have different benchmarks, but there’s no right or wrong on how much you ‘should’ spend on stuff that is ‘only’ a hobby (y)

I’ve spent a small fortune on gear which some will see as crazy, but it brings me enjoyment and so it’s justified in my eyes (y)

Look into the Tokina 11-16, that'll make up for your stop low light improvement if that's all you need.

6d over 5dii if you go that way.

It's the noise I get that's frustrating mainly when shooting indoor car shows. I have a f2.8 lens but it starts at 18mm (crop sensor)

Are there any fast wide angle primes for DSLR? I think Fuji and Sigma for Sony mirrorless do some but that's a complete swap of systems.

You need to look for a better performing body or bigger aperture lens if you want to stick with Canon.

I have had a look but none seem to be that wide and low aperture. Sigma do 18-35mm I think it is at f1.8 which I have considered in the past but 18mm is pushing it for indoor shows

Have you tried flash to help with the indoor shows? Might be the cheapest option.

Ide say £400/£450. Suppose I could sell my 10-20mm sigma and 18-50 f2.8 sigma as well so maybe £500? (Also have a 70-200mm f4 but Ile keep that))

If I can get something for my 60D then that will save me quite a bit
Tokina do a couple of fast wide angles (16-28mm f2.8 and 11-20mm f2.8) but no idea how good they are. Sigma do the 14-24mm f2.8 art but that's heavy and imagine out of budget. Tamron do the 15-30mm f2.8 but it's heavy and I'm not sure of used cost. Canon of course do the 16-35mm f2.8 but again I think this will be out of budget.

No I haven't. Don't seem to see many people with flashes at indoor shows I go to so I've always wondered what lenses/bodies they are using
Not all events allow flash photography, what events do you go to? Also, how far away are the subjects and how high is the ceiling?

Okay. If you are going to get a wide(r) faster (f/2.8) lens than I don't see the point of keeping the 10-20mm also so selling that increases your budget to......? An extra few hundred quid? So, you now have the budget for a £6-700 lens.

Sigma do a 16/1.4 prime in Sony E/Canon M/M43 mount for less than your £400 budget. Of course you'd then need a Sony A6*** body or Canon M. Might be worth searching on how the 70-200mm will perform on a Canon M - obviously, you'll need to price an adapter into things too. Additionally, you don't really want to 'upgrade' to another body which has worse ISO performance......

The most straightforward option is a more modern APSc body with better ISO performance. If you go FF Canon you're probably going to need the 16-35/2.8L

Go and do some maths ££ ;)

Not easy is it?

Most car shows have no problems with flash. So one option is to add light
You could use a tripod and use a longer exposure and could drop ISO
Samyang do a 14mm f/2.8 with autofocus. New £ 600

IF your sigma 18-50 f/2.8 is suitable for full frame that would be fairly wide on a full frame body.

Indoor stuff is mainly the Autosport show at the NEC and Ultimate Dubs at the Telford International Center. Very high ceilings

Definitly not. Will look at selling the 10-20mm sigma I think like you say. Never thought of that but yes a new APSc would be a good idea. Every now and then I do shoot motorsport as well which the crop factor does come in handy but not as a much as stationary car stuff.

My 18-50 sigma isn't compatable on full frame.

Do newer APS-C sensor bodies handle noise/dark situations a lot better now than the 60D? Just checked my 60D and its only got 16k shutter count but the body is still a 10 year old body.

Anybody know what the M50 is like? I take it ide have to have adapters to run my lenses ASP-C lenses and a 70-200 F4 L

TBH I'm surprised that noise is an issue then as you'll be able to keep ISO down by using a slow shutter speed (obviously IBIS and/or lens IS helps with this). In those kinds of places my biggest 'concern' is the poor quality of light rather than the noise per se. FF can help with this where light quality is poor rather than/as well as low.

@Beav faster lenses wide open also come with less depth of field, which may or may not be the look you want. That can work well for a small subject, but may be disappointing for a larger subject. For larger subjects my best results from indoor shows have been with flash.
