When to realise that enough is enough!

From what I can see you have got some really great pictures. Keep up the good work and get even better :)
It all takes time, I felt the same as you not that long ago and now things have picked up and I found my love for photography again and have a huge project now in motion that will be loads of fun and hopefully make a difference to some people. Try entering some compititions or making your own little projects. Set yourself goals and go on little missions with camera intow. Just enjoy it and soak up as much as poss. :D

Thank you

Never feel embarrassed about questions you need to ask. Indeed some find it frustrating when there are questions asked by newbies, but personally I only get annoyed when I think that people are asking with no 'real' intention of 'learning' and just asking because they are too lazy to find it out for themselves and perhaps will read your reply and not do anything about it. Now you are a 'real' member of this forum, a valued member with many friends who are aware of your journey to learn this art and support you on it. There are many here who want to help you and will NEVER think your questions are trivial! Sometimes it is the silliest little thing that puts up a barrier that is frustrating. If you don't ask ALL the questions, how will you find out what it is that is causing you the angst? Every one here wants to help you. Even newbies like me!

Have faith. Every journey is made up of lots of little steps :)

Thank you, so true those words perhaps I only take very small steps and who knows one day I will reach my destination.!

I've felt like giving up several times but after a while u realised it had just been a bad day and i knew that the fixation would be back in a day or two.

I have so much more to learn but just hang on in there and it'll come!!

Anyway when all is lost at least it's a good way to keep in some sort if shape. Well for me it is given I love landscapes and the only exercise I take is climbing to strange placed with camera gear. Look at it as a lifestyle choice!! Lol

Thank you

Nicki, your shots have massively improved from last year! Without the knowledge of computer systems or the ability to PP images as much of others you may also have a big advantage, when you can get those shots right every time in the camera you'll have a big bonus over a lot of peeps...

Thank you Ryan  perhaps I am a perfectionist and want the picture to come out of the camera right every time because the thought of PP frightens me in case I ruin it

It is trying to make the decisions on the setting in the camera that haunts me also and you know at times you only get one shot sometimes, and there is only a certain amount of PP you can do to make the shot perfect. I must be the only person that sits out in a field on a vigil reading my manual to try and set the camera to the best possible settings.

Thanks all for your nice comments, I won't worry about asking the trivial questions, after all "if you don't ask you don't get"

I am probably the only person that sits out reading the manual while taking photos to see if I am doing it right !

Good old saying "Practice makes perfect"

oh no your not,ah ah, being a total newbie i wish i was taking photos like yours, there is always someone lower on the ladder, and the only way to climb a ladder is one step at a time! we will get there eventually.

Nicki, you are going in the right direction, but I sense that you would learn faster and better by being shown on a one to one basis, I get the impression that the more reading you do the more you get confused. That is not a criticism at all, many are like this, including myself and many who come out with me.

The 7D seems a complicated beast to set up and learn to use to it's potential, so why not revert back to your 450 for a week or two and get some confidence back?

i get this feeling at times. try changing your style up a little. copy your photographic heroes, you will improve no end. browse flickr, or any photo website for inspiration. :)

Might just be ego but I'm fortunate to maintain a reasonable amount of faith in my images. What winds me up is seeing work assigned on the basis of contacts rather than portfolio, but I guess that's a whole other story

No ego I don't always comment but I do love a lot of your photos when I see them over on flickr

Thank you all again for the encouragement. Just want to be better than I am.

Glad I am not the only one that feels this way and I can assure you it is not Ego, but just want to be good or average at what I do.

Be great if I could find someone to do that

Whereabouts are you based? Have you looked on the mentor thread?

try some 'research' too. not just simply looking at good photos, but more analysing them. what makes them good? try and find out why the general public (or non photographers) like these good photos. especially look for good composition and how people can use light. this is what i did when i felt i was starting to improve.
