When is a fisheye not a fisheye?

I was told this morning that the Sigma 15mm fisheye lens isn't actually a fisheye lens.. is this true?

15mm F2.8 EX DG DIAGONAL Fisheye

This digitally optimized diagonal fisheye lens is equipped with a new multi-layer coating technology that reduces both flare and ghosting. By taking advantage of both the distortion aberration, specific to fisheye lenses and the minimum shooting distance of 15 cm (5.9 inches), the photographer can shoot creative images.
 
The guy reckons it's a full frame lens/set up?? Reckons it'll get wide curvy images but not the proper fisheye effect?
He wanted £430 for the 15mm and £550 for the 8mm... Found the 8mm online inc delivery (next day) for £420.. still shopping about though.

There are two types of fisheye - 180 degree field of view corner to corner and 180 degree field of view across the whole frame (which creates a circular image)

The sigma 15 is a corner to corner (so it fills the picture) and on a full frame camera will give 180 degrees corner to corner

8 is the full 180 and a circular image
 
If the one you're talking about is the one mentioned above ie the 15mm 2.8 EX DG then it's specifically made for a crop sensor digital camera and isn't suitable for a full frame camera! Have a look at the sample shot on the Sigma web site it looks pretty "fish eye" to me ;)
 
I think I'll go for the 8mm to be honest, it's within my price range if I get it online. Just not keen on buying online, lots of scammers. But seen a few sites recommended on here so will use one of them.

Not true. This lens will work fine on full frame. I've seen it used on a 5D. Sigma's naming for crop sensor only lenses is DC and not DG

But remember, if you're using a full-frame fish on a crop body, you won't get 180 degrees of view.
 
Indeed, I'm not sure what the exact number would be for a 1.5x or 1.6x crop but on a 1DMkII I get 180 degrees horizontally and about 140 or so vertically from an 8mm Peleng. At a guess you're probably looking at 140 degrees by 110 maybe 120 on a 30D
 
All these numbers... I am no good at all lol. I'm using it on the 350d, so would 8mm or 15mm be my best bet for the full circular fisheye pics?

On a crop body you will not get a full circular image from either. I have the 8mm and you get the fll circle on the horizontal, but lose a bit on the top and bottom. I don't think you can get a FE that gives a full circular image on a crop sensor.

No, wait... hmm... wrong setup line.

Pentax/Tokina do a 10-17mm DX rectilinear fisheye zoom designed for digital only which gives a full frame 180° diagonal angle of view at 10mm on a 1.5 factor APS-C sensor. Probably something like 179° on a Canon.

There is also a Nikkor 10.5mm DX rectilinear fisheye lens for Nikon, or compatible mount, digital cameras too.

Those are the only ones I know of designed for DSLRs so giving the full effect. I do not think you can get a digital circular fisheye.
