Its a serious question!

Ohhh, sorry. :coat:

When a mod decides it's enough I guess.

But therefore why does a mod guess its enough. If a mod just came and closed this thread down, we wouldnt have any idea...yet they'd think its spamming, when in theory we're trying to get to the bottom of something.

lol....when it gets smutty you mean?

The other one wasnt smutty. maybe thats why they closed it?
I mean, Most of the mods were in on the MSN thread...LOL

2 very good points, maybe u werent smutty enough either that or they objected to DDs one word posts. find a mod and ask one

I decided the other thread was spam as it served no usedful purpose. And there were multiple posts consisting of single word or letters.

out of focus may well be an off topic area, where you can kick back and chill out, but it's not a playground

Hope that helps :)

Is there a simple way to prevent OOF posts from not showing in the post counts and then have OOF threads delete after a fixed time of inactivity. This might discourage spamming and ultimately free up server capacity.

Bob

The mods used to (sometimes still do) leave a post giving reasons for their actions at the end of a thread they had closed or edited, to my mind that's only good manners. Plus when you give a reason it saves other threads like this one popping up.

Too right, I know its hard keeping threads tidy and it takes up alot of time, however, a little explanation puts everyone in the picture and is ofcourse good manners.

That's absolutely right and I agree 100%. There is, as always, another side to the story though. As someone who has been a mod on a busy forum there have been times that for various reasons I've moved, closed or deleted a thread and not posted up an explanation.

This has usually been because something has cropped up, the phone has rung, I've needed to dash out or something similar. It's easy to forget sometimes that mods aren't people that work here but folks giving up their time to keep this place running smoothly. Everything they do will be done with the best of intentions, even if it may not come across that way all the time. :)

I did leave a note to say why the thread was closed.

:)

And I love the way you do it "Mind the doors" did you ever see " death line" I think it was called back in the early 70's? I always smile when you do that DF :D
Ooops possibly a spam post  sorry.

The only thing I remember from the early 70's was nappies and bad clothing!!! Just how old do you think I am?

:)

We have don't have a shoutbox on here for people to just say hello or talk about say what they're doing that day etc. Had been toying with suggesting a thread in perhaps out of focus for such thing or am I going to get fitted for a concrete overcoat?! We could call it 'The Daily Thread'!

No Idea DF but you obviously have an old head on young shoulders then :D ( is that enough creeping for now?)

you mean like a "well out of order focus type thing where anything goes? Hmmmm we would need to exclude the mods, so we could talk about them behind their back though :D

The Site said:
Out of Focus Totally unrelated off topic type stuff, jokes, rants, raves..anything at all thats nothing to do with photography!

We really shouldn't need another forum should we?

I'm not suggesting another forum! Rather say things we're doing that day, letting steam off after hard day at office.

Isn't that what IRC is for? Not having ventured into IRC I have no idea what gets discussed but I suspect it may serve the purpose.

I think the mods strike a good balance allowing enough Spam to keep us all happy and our post counts up, without flooding the boards with lots of off topic stuff..

Anyway enough praise for the mods, I'm off to make some random posts:D

Hmm second thoughts
That doesn't really narrow it down too much  are you speakin' as a child of the 70's or as a parent? :D

Right, from this thread I have learnt, that we're unsure if DF is a child of the 70's or a Parent in the 70's but with that tash on his picture....I'm unsure. ;)

And seen as some people are going completely off topic, are they not spamming my thread?
So will this get closed cos someone decided to spam it?

And on the topic of spamming....basically there is nothing that determines what is spam and what isnt spam....just when the mod determines enough is enough. Which doesnt help anyone! LOL

I was just reading through this thread (yes i am that sad i read through old threads before i ask questions). The only reason i was reading is because i was wondering about a shoutbox for general chit chat, that way threads don't get posted just for the sake of it and members can start getting to know each other before the next convention and see i glimps into eachothers personalities. I know as a mod on other forums you do need to have some rules in place for things like that ie no spamming or live links in there but it does get people talking.
