Fuji 160S disappeared! Was just about to buy a load of the stuff, no ones got any and Fuji no longer list it on their website!

Just fired off an email asking how much they have left - all their film appears to be on offer at the moment, clearout perhaps?

I'm going to be needing a bigger freezer.

Yes, I noticed there are several films which are close to their expiry date, so it does make you wonder. It would be a shame if Fuji cut down their range of films as I always prefered theirs to the Kodak equivalents - years ago when I used to shoot in colour. I found the Fuji's were a little 'warmer' looking than Kodak's.

I've found the opposite RE colour, but fuji 160 has slightly better grain that ektar according to my scans. That coupled with the unpredictability regarding exposure of the latter, as well as a shocking set of quality issues in the vast majority of my Ektar stock has led me to go back to Fuji....only now they don't make it anymore! :bang:

Update: Just cleared Mathers out of 160S. hehe.

I only shot in colour from around the mid-80's to the early 90's so I'm sure the films have improved since then. The last time I used Fuji was when it used to be called Fujicolor HR 100, HR 200, etc. up to 1600 ISO. The Kodak's, if I remember correctly, were called VR 100, VR 200 and so on all the way up to VR 1000. That's going back a bit.

For landscapes with the Fuji's, I also found the greens to be greener (if I can put it like that) but the Kodak's seemed to have a very slight blue-ish cast. Of course, this may have been down to the processing.

I don't think I've ever shot those, back then I was shooting good old Fujicolor and Kodak Gold / Color Plus!

Now it's Ektar vs 160S/C

Whilst we're here a very big thumbs up for Mathers, a large packet of 160s has just come through my door!

Excellent, it's a shame they're no longer produced. I wish you well with them.

Going back to Kodak film again, I've heard good things said about the Ektar with regards to colour and very fine grain but I've never got round to trying a roll. When I bought my first SLR back in 1983, Kodak's film at the time was called Kodacolor II which was replaced with the VR range - (crikey, I'm showing my age now!)

I've had a lot of issues with Ektar - exposure wise although it has a good latitude in that you can go way over and a little under and still get an exposure, unless you get it spot on you will have a very, very weird reproduction of the scene. I bought mine in a big batch from 7DS in October, and just about every roll has a problem with vertical colour shift streaks on the right third of nearly every frame, I've also had effects that look like Newton rings but are actually on the film itself and nothing to do with scanning. It's a shame becase when Ektar works it really has a wow factor like no other film.

Can I just pick up on this point - quality issues with Kodak film stock is almost unheard of, and if you were having any serious problems I'm sure EK would be happy to hear about them. You can knock Kodak on a lot of things, but their quality control is something they've got down to a fine art along with Ilford and Fujifilm.

I mentioned Issue 1 in another thread where it appeared to have happened to another member's Portra 400 shot and Issue 2 has been seen in a lot of my images. (althoughg i've exaggerated it's effect in this image)

Thanks for posting those examples, and I see what you mean about the Newton rings. It's a shame really as this is one film I probably would have tried if I ever went back to shooting in colour again. If that day came, I guess good old Fuji would be back in my camera instead.

I have to say that all of the ektar I have shot (about half a dozen rolls) has never had these problems and has been consistently very good. I am just finishing off my last 2 rolls now in fact!

Interesting. It might be worth a post on APUG, I'm sure someone like Photo Engineer would be very interested to see and try and work out what was causing it.

Alan, I've had the rings as well with Ektar and thought it was my inexperience with scanning. But it's only affected a few frames of the rolls I've shot and I haven't looked at the negative up close to see if it was present there.

Of the rings effect there's so far only been that shot affected - the magenta stripes affects perhaps 20% of all my shots on Ektar. :(
