When did student grants stop....

about the same time as the government allowed any Tom, Dick, and Harry college to rebrand themselves as a "University" I guess...

And spend the money on anything apart from student materials

and student loans start?

I had the option of a loan (about £400) in the 1990/91 academic year and still got a minimal grant. That was the first year of loans. I have no idea how long the grant continued after that as I graduated.

Good argument, and there is only one correct answer. The loans started a while before the grants ended, but if it is the start of new system, then it is the Ucas application year that ended in 2007.

If you applied in 2007, then you were eligable for a reduced loan, but could also apply for a (measly) grant.

If you applied in 1998, then you could get a much higher loan under the new system, and had to pay fees! but no grants were available.

I say it is when you apply, because I applied and got a place on the 1997 intake, but deferred my place for 12 months, so whilst the rest of my start year were under the new system, I was still under the old one.

So, the answer could be 1997 or it could be 1998, or you could live in Scotland and still get one, and not pay fees......

Ok, so I'm only marginally clearer

Maybe I should be more specific, but was trying to avoid a slanging match, (not unlike the one I've just had with the inlaws over this :bang:)

My true question is, which party was it that scrapped the old grant system, and then introduced the current system?

I can tell you defintively when Student Grant started, according to Wiki:

"Student Grant is a cartoon strip in the British comic Viz featuring a University student named Grant Wankshaft. It first appeared in 1992 and was quite prolific during the rest of the 1990s, although has appeared less frequently since then. The strip was created by Simon Thorp"

In regards to the origional question:

I am certain that it was a Tory proposal, seeing as Tony Blair was the first non Tory PM in my lifetime (Maggie from 1979) and he started in 1997.

theres

tuition fee loan (approx £3225).... everyone gest that (if wanted)

loan upto £3500 (depending on if you get the grant)

grant upto £2900 (depending on family income)

bursary is anything upto £1500 - purely depends on income and university....

so grants didnt stop. They just give us students money *which go on camera lenses :D *
hope that helps :)

I started university in 1997 and got a full student grant for my two years education.
Student grants stopped in 1998, only reason I know this is my wife started uni in 1998 and couldn't get a student grant, she could only get a student loan.

In 1997, a report by Sir Ron Dearing recommended that students should contribute to the costs of university education. The Labour government under Tony Blair passed the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998 which introduced tuition fees of £1,000 to start in the 1998/9 academic year.[2] In addition, maintenance grants were replaced with repayable student loans for all but the poorest students.

Yep, definitely 1998 academic year, as my mates were the last to get a proper grant.

I'm in Scotland and got a loan in 2008, not sure how it works down south!

I got a student loan in 1992, which is the year they started. Think I bought an Intel 486 based PC. The level of grants began to fall at the same time.

I'd agree with this timescale.

I started uni in Oct 1989 when there were no loans and I received a full grant which was roughly £800 for the first two terms and slightly less for the Summer term. The reason being that you needed more to cover you for the four week holidays between terms, whereas the Summer holiday could be spent at your parents' house and working.

A full grant and no loans in my second year of 90-91.

91-92 I was on my industrial placement and earning a salary, so my grant was deferred for a year. I also happened to invest in BT shares paying the first two of three installments.

92-93 I returned to uni for my final year and the grant was still there although, after allowing for inflation, it had reduced slightly in real terms. I would have been able to cope with that but the final installment for my BT shares was due and if I didn't pay it, I would have had to return them and lose out on the increase in value so I took out a student loan.

I was in the first year of loans, I graduated in 2000, 3 year degree so I am assuming 1997. I got no grants at all, all loans to the tune of £12,000 which I have another year and a half roughly till I am clear. I had to take all loans as a single mummy with 5 kids.

I have been told that way back when, students would get a grant during term time, and could then sign on during the holidays for extra income?

don't know how true that is, but I did get made redundant when I was a student.

read my post... if im getting at it righ - i get grants and bursarys and loans..!
