If TP has any wheelchair bound photographers, I could do with your input please.

We currently have a project on the go to enable wheelchair users to get out and about more in the countryside.

But I need your help. What I would like to know is the height your eyes/head are at when using your cameras from your wheelchairs?

I cannot give any more info just yet, still working things out, but we would be most grateful for any info available. I do not know any wheelchair bound photographers, hence me asking on here.

Thanks.

There are couple on here for sure Ade,
Would you prefer this in Talk photography,
or are you happy to leave it in OoF?

Suppose it could be better in Talk Photography,if you don`t mind please Chris.

On it's Way Ade.
Good luck I hope you get what you are looking for (y)

(I left you a 24 hour re-direct from OoF too)

appreciate it, thanks Chris.

2 members who are wheelchair users spring to mind, @Wheels (Julian) and @DayDreamer (John). PMs to them might get answers.

Just seen this thread & as Nod says I am a wheelchair user so will measure up late post the details later :)

My eyes are 48" from floor level in each of the two wheelchairs I use. Let me know if you want owt more.

Thanks John, and thanks for the links guys. I`ll contact that forum and ask the questions over there as well.

just a thought so many variables from persons torso height to type of chair - I will need help with the measuring bit as bed bound at present so will try to remember when next in chair .
If you could, that would be great thanks Liz.

I`m trying to determine if I need to use a hydraulic platform to adjust for different peoples operating height. From what I have gleaned so far, I think we will have to do something like this.

ah my other half is looking at building something similar for getting wheel chair in and out of a landrover - there are several on the market but very expensive indeed . Also worth considering is or is it are those that used motorised wheelchairs and scooters.

I had a light bulb idea the other night that may be of interest

Floor to eye height will vary for wheelchair users.

I`m gonna ask some more here, please correct me when I am wrong, there is no offense intended in any of these, just trying to get as much info as possible.

1. Wheelchairs are specific to one person, you get used to your own and would find it difficult to swap,yes/no?

2. Mobility scooter users, are you able to get around a little without them? Say being able to walk 10 feet or so? Or is that entirely case dependent?

3. How smooth does the terrain have to be for you, smooth tarmac or could you all get around on compacted pebble paths?

4. What sort of incline will mobility scooters go up with ease?

Liz, Julian,Marcus and John, thanks for the help so far,it is appreciated.

1) yeah
2) sorry dont know
3) my wheelchair is only made really for smooth surfaces. Which does hinder where I can go and do photographically.
4) Sorry Dunno

Absolutely.............:)

Ok I'll let you know the measurements tomorrow - I've got x2 scooters - one is a smaller car-boot scooter and the other is one of the larger 8mph scooters so I'll get you measurements on both :)

1. Generally wheelchairs are specific to the end-user - most people would get by with a generic one but with all of us being different shapes and sizes then there's no rule of thumb.. I'm only 4ft 6 and 7.5 stone so my sports wheelchair is custom built for me and obviously wouldn't suit another disabled person..

2. I can walk small distances around the house but for any kind of mobility outdoors I have my mobility car and x2 scooters.. the larger scooter is for use for me locally around town - the smaller car-boot scooter does as it says on the tin and basically comes anywhere I go when I go out in the car..

3. The larger scooter is more suited to rough terrain - it has better tyres, has a bit more power and has suspension.. the smaller scooter is slower, no suspension, harder seat etc.. so really is more suited for 'around towns' as opposed to countryside, pebbled paths etc..

4. The larger 8mph scooter can fly up most inclines - the smaller 4mph scooter as long as its fully charged will get up decent inclines all be it a lot slower - again assuming its smooth..

Hope that helps matey

1 My two wheelchairs are NHS & nothing bespoken, or special, so I would easily be able to get into another 'bog standard' one but not ones made to measure - as it were. I have one without & one with 'Power Pack' motor.

2 I hire scooters sometimes & always from Shopmobilty but I don't feel safe on them for the same reasons I had to stop driving a car several years ago - poor concentration levels & the hire places in my neck of the woods mean navigating through busy streets to get to where I want to be.

3 When being pushed over cobbles my teeth chatter - so tend to watch out for this type of surface & avoid.

4 Not sure of the exact measurement of inclines but any scooter I've hired & my motorised wheelchair can get up but on the latter my 'pusher' may have to give a little bit of a push - but not much.

In home not a wheelchair user but any further than walking our car (with two sticks) it is the wheelchair.

I will send you measurement for myself shortly (not calling myself shortly) :-D

Im 6ft 1 well I was when I could stand up ;)

For me personally my floor to eye level is 4ft 6 inches (or 137.16 cm)

1. sort of, it depends on the disability and whether its a power or manual wheelchair. a safer answer would be yes.

2. n/a

3. ok over most surfaces you'd walk on. some chairs have small thin caster wheels that could be a problem

4. I think the recommended incline is about 10` i'm ok at going steeper if someone is behind to stop it tipping over.

eye height from floor is about 50"

Thanks for the input , it is appreciated, hopefully our plans will come to fruition.

Ade, it might be worth contacting your local disabled access lot at the council. They should be able to tell you what their regulations are for access and their recommendations about surfaces etc.

Measured using the larger of my x2 scooters today - from gound to eye level for me is 42".. hope that helps

Thanks guys, you have all given me some ideas , pointers and good advice, thanks again.
