There has been an update for WhatsApp for iOS, one of the new features is voice calling being added (which has been live for Android for weeks already).

Checking WhatsApp on my iPhone this evening I notice that I now have a telephone icon present to make WhatsApp calls and a quick test shows it is now working.

brilliant, now i can call my brother in spain instead of texting

out of interest will this work on an iPad over wi-fi? or is it exclusive to iPhone?

Could you not have done that already with Hangouts or Viber?

WhatsApp is the predominant message app, I would think WhatsApp users outnumber Hangouts and Viber users by quite some factor. Even non-techie people will have WhatsApp installed but not the others.

I tried Viber last year, I just couldn't persuade enough people to use it to make it worthwhile.

WhatsApp will only work with a phone device unfortunately.

Which is strange really when you think the other two have had messaging, SMS and voice/video calling for a long long time. The power of marketing I suppose.

As far as I know, Android Phones come with Hangouts pre-installed. Or at least the Nexus range do.

They do, but for some reason not many people seem to use it, there is even a Hangouts app for iOS.

As you said, the power of marketing.

I think Whatsapp calling for Android has been working for some time. At least I think so. My geeky mate with Android phones was crowing about it last month

As I mentioned in post 1 ;), it's been available on Android for around 3 weeks now.

I done test with this and although it works - there is a little lag (about 1-2 sec) between conversations - I guess it all depends on the how good the signal is.

It's just voice over ip, hardly new technology.
Surprised it has taken them this long to bring it in.
