1, what do you shoot with?
- Pentax K200d (kit lenses DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL and DA 50-200mm F4-5.6) + a variety of old KA mount manual lenses.

2, why did you choose that system?
- Used to use a Pentax P30 and so had lenses for that and liked the idea that I could continue to use them.
- liked the idea of in-body image stabiliser which would work with the older lenses.
- The old Pentax P30 had given me great service. It even survived with only minor scratches when dropped 6 feet onto tarmac!

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
- Decent big aperture lenses at affordable prices.
- Pictures are sometimes not very sharp. I have been unable to work out if this is the lenses, the auto-focus, or me not getting on very well with the image stabiliser (I suspect the later as tripod or beanbag pictures are usually OK.)

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
- If I had the money to spend again I would go for Nikon. This is based purely on the fact that whenever I find picture I like, 75% of the time they have been taken on a Nikon.

1. Canon 50d
2. My Mum has a Canon so I was already familiar with the layout, I tried other in the shop but the Canon felt best :)
3. I don't think the system is lacking... I think that is all me!
4. Same again :D

2. Through friends - borrowed their DSLRs and became familiar with the Nikon system.

3. Nothing; the camera still exceeds my ability.

4. Nikon again - I have had no problems and so see no need to use anything else!
 
1, Nikon (D80, not had for very long I was a lumix P&S +Zenit film user before)
2, Like how everything is on nikons, all the options, the two scroll wheels, their ability to focus in low light. the lower ones lack the built in focus motor which is a shame, but helped push me up the scale of which camera to start with (so i bought a better but older second hand model)
3, the extras of the D90 would have been nice, i can live without them for now though, but i had the ££ thats what i would have got.
4, done the same, i spent a fair while looking into it.

Tried friends Nikon and schools Canon and found that the Nikon was harder to hold, also the Canon's interface was nicer and easier to use.

Nothing, does what i want it to do.

Possibly Nikon in a "Grass is greener" sort of way. I'd be perfectly happy starting over with Canon though.

2, why did you choose that system?
I felt I was encountering limitations that I hadn't previously noticed with my first DSLR (Sony A200) and decided to upgrade. I didn't like any of the new Sony models, they all felt too small and didn't sit right in my hand, and I couldn't find an A700 to try before buying and didn't want to buy blind. Started looking at various models of Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Pentax and in my price range the Canon 50D was the one that sat just right in my hand. Gave serious consideration to the Nikon D90 because of the price difference, but the Canon was much more comfortable in my hand, which for me is a big thing.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
At this point in time, nothing. For the future, who knows but I'm guessing nothing.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
I just have, and given the same choices it would be Canon again.

2, Brand loyalty, bought an A1 years ago and have stuck with Canon since.
3, Good AF performance in low light
4, If I could I would seriously look at Nikon's, for Af and low light performance plus I like the idea of having direct access to functions through buttons rather than menus.

Hoping my 1D MKIV turns up in the next couple of days and I can withdraw number 4 !!? ;)

At the time the 300d had just come out which was a new level of affordable introductory DSLR ownership. Arguably the camera that started it all. My friend was going to the states (when the dollar was 1.89 to the pound and got some great deals) and a few other mates jumped on the bandwagon at the same time so it seemed a good idea to stick with Canon together as a group. Plus, I completely at the time thought Canon had the edge. Frankly, in terms of lenses, I still do.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
Canon seem to be holding off making some lenses that people are crying out for. Or even more frustratingly, making them without a constant f/2.8 apeture throughout. Additionally and more importantly the ISO performance needs to keep up with the excellent offerings from Nikon which is what the short term future of DSLRs is all about. This is the new race.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
Assuming I had Canon lenses then I would stick with Canon. If I literally started from scratch, I might well try Nikon, but it would be based on what the current most suitable Camera would be for me as really I have no preference, other than that Canon have the slight edge on lenses, espcially affordable underdog lenses that surprise you.

Because I owned a Minolta A1 prosumer (and had a £300 flash at the time). I also liked the handling of the Minolta 7D, which was very much like my Nikon Film SLR to use.
I owned a Nikon Film (AF) SLR as well as a Praktica (MF)

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
Nothing really. I have all of the lenses that I need TBH. Would have been nice to have an 'f4 zoom' lenses when starting off, but this probably saved myself buying twice!
High ISO performance could be better, but as it's a hobby for me, if the light is crap, I can always come back another day to get the shot.
I personally don't worry 'missing lenses from the system' that I have no intention of buying. And obviously very pleased with having AF Zeiss glass.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
I'm sure if I had started with Canon or Nikon I would be just as happy. The Sony system does all I need it to do, and that's all that matters to me.

i'm assuming that #3 means something lacking that isn't available right now? or is it something that i want that i haven't got, that is available? if it's the latter then i want a wide angle; 16-35mm would do me a treat!!

It's my third Canon, my first DSLR. Like its predecessors, it's beautifully engineered, reliable, offers good price performance and scales its complexity well. You can start out in the automatic modes, where it's no more complex than a compact, and then explore all the camera's more advanced features as you gain in experience. The 450D doesn't throw you in at the deep end.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?

Not a lot, bearing in mind its price. I'd like to see more and more advanced image stabilistion systems in Canon Lenses and a dual SDHC / CF slot in whatever replaces the 7D.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

Precisely what I have at the moment.

Nikon D80. Started with a D40 but upgraded after about a year

2, why did you choose that system?
I prefered the Nikon menu system and the D40 felt better in my hands than the Canon, Sony and Olympus models I tried

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
I'd like better high ISO performance from the D80. Might need to get a D90 :)

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
I really like the Nikon system so no change of manufacturer but I'd get a D90 or D700 :love:

i shoot an olympus point and shoot...sort of
really passay and nearly bust

1. Sony A200

2. I wanted an entry level body to see if I liked photography. The choice at the time was A200 Nikon D60 or Canon 1000D. I opted for the Sony as it felt better in my hand, and the image stabilisation was in the body and not the lenses. Hence, I could buy second hand glass much cheaper than the IS range of lenses on canon for example.

3. I would like better ISO performance, a better selection of mid-range lenses, you either buy cheapish, or mega oober expensive Zeiss. Nothing in the middle. Would be nice if Sony would release some of the old Minolta G type lenses, but especially designed aps-c type sensors.

4. Knowing that I was going to be buying mainly second hand glass, sony/minolta (good glass) is hard to find. With canikon, a much better range, and better price. So maybe I should have bought a secondhand d80 or d200 at the time. However, If the upgrade of the much awaited A700 is a wash, I think that I may jump ship. Would love a D700 or D300 in that scenario.

2. Better (IMO, and at the time) starter DSLR, and I got along with the body well.

3. Nothing at the moment, although high ISO performance on my body is crap.

i chose sony as a mate recommended them,and i didn't know any better...although i'm happy with my kit.

lacking..i'm not really sure,but the proprietry hotshoe is a bit of a pain.oh,and better AF and high ISO performance.

probably nikon....

When I bought into Canon it was with the 20D which was great at the time, then I discovered full frame and became an addict.

High ISO performance, Auto ISO feature. Weddings can be like a crypt!

Nikon 2x D700 with some fast glass.

I wanted to upgrade from my bridge cam to DSLR, after hours of online reading and trying our various cameras in the shops i opted for the above. Oh and price played a part on the model i went for.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
Nothing so far.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
Happy with what i've got for now.

Several reasons but I think the main one was that I had access to several friends equipment that I used before hand.

Its not lacking anything at the moment in fact its the operator which is lacking. I guess it will take a wee while for me to develop enough skills to wring the blighters neck for it.
4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
I think in an ideal world what I would have really liked would have been the opportunity to use possibly three comparative cameras for a weekend each. The equipment I used was definitely biased to Canon hence my choice.

3. L lenses, think thats more my wallet lacking than the system though.

2. Swapped from Canon for a number of reasons, mainly the "feel" of Nikon Cameras (D300/D700), CLS & my general impression that Nikon bodies are better than rivals.
3. For me? Nothing. I don't think gear (or technology) is my limitation - it's my budget!
4. I Can't see myself ever switching from Nikon, so Nikon for me.

1. Pentax
2. Dad had a Penty ME super in the 80's and hey dads know what they were doing.... oh and didn't know if I would get the bug and £380 for body and twin lens kit sounded a bargain..... new from currys.
3. Twin adjustment dials, which is why I have the bargain of the decade now.... K20D body only, ex demo £349........... and it only had 311 shutter clicks......... 14.2 mpeg as opposed to 10.2, fully weatherproofed, grippable and it now has a grip, pic review shows you blown and darks, ability to adjust exposure by EV dial even in full M mode, not knocking the K-m at all, was a cool camera to get me started and tempted to keep it as taken some corkers with it, and it's my first DSLR and hey all "real togs" have 2 bodies...... but a huge jump from entry level to "prosumer" - pentax's words not mine..
4) Pentax.

Started with Sony, but managed to get a Nikon D3 cheap. I prefer the weight of it than the Sony. So the Sony went.

Nikon, Nikon and Sigma lenses.
2, why did you choose that system?
Uncle also uses Nikon so was able to borrow equipment from him and he was able to offer other help.
3, what is that current system lacking for you?
Absolutely nothing. Will be quite a while, I feel, before I outgrow my current setup.
4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
As per last answers, would probably choose Nikon again, does everything I want.
 
1, what do you shoot with? Canon 1D Mkiin + 20D

2, why did you choose that system? Choice of canon 350D (too compact), 20D or Nikon D70, 20D just knocked spots off the only other 2 camera's that were available at the time. Great camera and still use it today.

3, what is that current system lacking for you? My camera bodies deliver what I want and need at the moment, probably some more lenses like the 500 and 600mm f4 lenses and have become interested in the tilt/shift lenses.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for? Difficult, there is a great deal more choice today, if you limit me to the budget I had at the time that would be a challenge (used rather than new would be the way I would go) now if only there was a canon 1D MkIV for less than £2000 .

Tried two top brands - notmuch between them then. Thouhgt Canon felt more comfortable and also got a better deal.
3, what is that current system lacking for you? Nothing. Unless they could create an 18-600L f2.8 IS for about £50 :lol:
4, if you could start over again what would you go for? Probably Canon - excellent quality, lenses and tech developments.

3, System not lacking but my finances are! Would like the improved high ISO of D700

1. Two Canon 40D bodies
2. Handling: I find the Canon layout comfortable and intuitive
3. AF speed, so the 7D is the first camera to tempt an upgrade
