im conducting a little bit of research for a media studies project and was wondering if you could answer the following;

1, what do you shoot with?
2, why did you choose that system?
3, what is that current system lacking for you?
4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

cheers for any information.

Despite of what some nasty person has put under my screen name.

1 :nikon:

2 Bought my first Nikon erm..... A long long time ago. It felt like a proper camera compared with the Canon of that time.

3 Nothing really. I've just upgraded to a D700 (After dropping my D90) and for what i do it's everything i need.

4 Nikon again. No question. Especially now i have the D700. Built like a tank. Very impressed with the high iso too.

1. Canon (voted)
2. Tried in shop and was most comfortable
3. Poorer ISO handling than another (unmentionable) brand
4. The same

1 nikon
2 erm cos jessop knew more about it than others !! and reviews were good
3 a zoom button cos i am used to it with the g9 lol

1, what do you shoot with?
Sony A700

2, why did you choose that system?
I was using a Minolta 7000i on film and didn't want the expense of a new body and lenses at the same time. As it happens I ended up buying new lenses as getting the DSLR re-awoke my enthusiasm.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
I'd like Sony to put a few more of the old Minolta lenses back into production, especially the "enthusiast" level ones, e.g. 100mm f/2, 35mm f/2, 28mm f/2, 300mm f/4. Currently the pro stuff is pretty well served with the G and Zeiss autofocus lenses but there's not much between that and the kit lenses without going to the s/h market.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
Don't know. I really like the colours the Minolta / Sony lenses give and the Zeiss glass is amazing, if mostly not affordable (do Canikon have Zeiss AF lenses available?) so might stick with them, but dislike the prices of good s/h stuff.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?

1. Sony alpha 300
2. I chose it as a starter or first Dslr because its simple to use and all the buttons are in the right place. Oh, and it was a good price.
3.Nothing really, could do with more lenses i guess and obviously it could be better spec.
4. Tough one. If it was the same as before and i was on a tight budget id give the nikon d5000 a look.

1)Nikon

2)started on olyumpus OM and switched over to nikon when i got my first 35mm AF slr (F80) then onto f100, f5. stuck with it when digital was introduced and got a d1, d100, d2x, d2h, d300. have used canon film cameras briefly (eos 30 particularly) and digital (eos 10d) but really dont like the button layouts.

3)well, if i had the money id say ultra wide apeture primes, f1.2's. also id love nikon to do some newer f4 zooms, 70-200 for example. thats pretty much it though, love nikon.

4)the same

1 Canon
2 Bought my first SLR in the early 70s. Looked at Nikon and Canon. The Nikon was About
£20 pounds more than the Canon, a lot of money back then. As there was not a lot
between them spec wise, I chose Canon. Been loyal to them since.
3 Nothing that springs to mind.
4 I think I would still stay with Canon. I can honestly say that in nigh on 40 years of
Canon I have only had 1 problem with a camera. That was only a fuse.

1) Canon (voted)

2) Prefered the feel of it and just felt like there was more out there for canon cameras even though thats probably not true  plus the price at the time.

3) The ability to choose where i want to meter, more af points and im lacking the funds to buy better lenses

Canon
Been shooting with them since the 90's - and right now Nikon don't have anything that match my Canon lens lineup
Current system is lacking a 500mm F4 lens (I know you didn't mean that)
Starting again I would probably go Nikon right now - the D300s and 200-400 F4 is a very appealing combo.

1, what do you shoot with? Canon 20D
2, why did you choose that system? I wanted an affordable upgrade from my Samsung GX10, I liked the feel of the canons in my hand and liked the button layout. Also the range of lenses available.
3, what is that current system lacking for you? ISO performance
4, if you could start over again what would you go for? 40D

1. Nikon
2. I used to use canon, I started with a T70 film body and bought many others until I ended up with a 20D. I was going to buy a 1d or 5dmk2 and tried both, but then I got to have a go on a D3 and imo it just felt better in every way. I made the move to nikon when I bought the D700 (and now an F4 film body too) and I will never go back.
3. Not much really apart from a second memory card slot (but they wont do that because no-one would buy a D3)
4. I probably wouldnt change much to be honest as I am quite happy with the way things have turned out :)

1. Canon. (400D)
2. My first DSLR, mate of mine shoots canon and mentioned I could borrow his lenses every now and again. Was either that of the Nikon D40, and I don't know any Nikon users.
3. ISO performance, but then it is entry level.
4. I'm 2 months in and happy with canon.

1, what do you shoot with?

For digital - which I assume is what you're interested in - Nikon.

2, why did you choose that system?

Because the D40X (at the time) was a better entry-level camera than the Canon equivalent. Although had I twigged that there was no real secondhand market in AF-S lenses I might have chosen Canon.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?

Nothing.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

I now have a D90 so the af-s issue is sorted. If I started over now I'd waste far less time giving a damn about megapixels.

1, what do you shoot with? Nikon

2, why did you choose that system? When I was looking for an AF SLR, the Nikon in my budget/features shortlist fitted better than any of the others.

3, what is that current system lacking for you? Nothing that I want/need.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for? Whichever fitted me best in my budget/features shortlist.

im gonna have ago aswell

1, sony

2, cheap at the time, seem more robust than canon equivalents and liked the look of the ziess lenses if i can ever afford them

3, i want to get into portraiture and think the 35mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4 are too expensive so i think there should be some cheaper f1.8 versions. also sony should make clear of what camera's are on what level (eg. a700 is mid range/semi pro)

4, i would still stay sony because out of all sony stuff i've had nothing's ever broke and i like the look of zeiss lenses.

1, what do you shoot with?

Canon 40D

2, why did you choose that system?

I Liked the feel in the shop, tried all makes

3, what is that current system lacking for you?

Nothing I can think of.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

I would still go the Canon route as I like the feel and it has all I need in the range (Cash excluded)

1. Canon 40D.

2. At the time the affordable Canon (350D) had better image quality (& lower noise) than it's competitors.

3, I'd like better performance in low light (cleaner, higher ISO) which could be achieved with a 5DII, had I the funds.

4, Probably Canon again, although I do appreciate and respect Nikon's refusal to play the MP game with the D700.

HTH :)

1) Nikon - D700 & D2X
2) Was given an old Nikorrmat for my 16th birthday many moons ago. After a few years, I switched briefly to Canon, but couldn't get on with it.
3) Nothing
4) Hard to say: it depends what's around. In all honesty, I think that there's little to choose between the major manufacturers in the quality of the gear these days (when looking at the pro kit).

Simon

1) I shoot Canon

2) I chose Canon because I have a few friends who also shoot Canon with lots of lush L glass and sundries I can beg, steal and borrow. Also because there is far more used lens choice at a decent price. :)

3) Didn't come with a free 20 year old blonde model, but you can't have everything.

4) If cash was no object I'd probably choose Nikon.

1, what do you shoot with? .............. Canon and for the schools work Fuji S5's. will be changing to Nikon next year as we need cameras that can use barcodes to add data of shoots to to the image.

2, why did you choose that system? .................. Canon because I love the speed of Ultrasonic lens. fuji ( soon to be Nikon) because for schools work we need all the school data added to the Images.

3, what is that current system lacking for you? ................ Fuji fell out with Nikon and decided not to make anymore. Canon does not do all the data added info we need for large shoots.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for? ................ Nikon.

1. Sony
2. Because the A200 worked out cheaper than the D60 My Dad had the D60, my Sister had the A200, I preferred the feel of the A200, go figure :p
3. Not many 'newer' lenses on the second hand market. It's quite easy to find old Minolta glass which is great, but for stuff like the Sigma 10-20mm, the newer more specialist stuff, it is quite difficult. Sony is also lacking any tempting higher end upgrades at present. It's all low/mid range. Roll on the A700 replacement!
4. I reckon I'd go with Sony again. I would definitely consider Nikon and Canon though, a Canon 40D or a Nikon D80 or D90 would be my choice if I decided to go with either one of them :) I just love my camera too much though and if I could start over, I'd probably just look for another A200.

1, Nikon
2, Started with Olynmpus back in the day, tried canon and Nikon, Nikon was the best
3, A porter to lug it all around
4, Nikon!

1, what do you shoot with?
Canon. EOS-1DsII and EOS-7D depending on mood, subject and motivation

2, why did you choose that system?
I used to shoot Olympus many years ago, but when the time came to move to autofocus, OM had withdrawn from the SLR market so it really was (at that time) a choice between Canon and Nikon. Canon won for two reasons - at the time it was a bit cheaper like for like and I also had a friend and could borrow lenses from.

Once I moved to digital (EOS-10D) I had enough lenses from my film days to mean that I stayed with the EOS system.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
For me, there are two things that Nikon have that I would really like:
1. The 200-400 f/4 zoom lens
2. A "Low cost" FF body with pro-spec AF (e.g. D700 or 5D with 7D AF)

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
If I was starting again now with a clean slate then I would go for Nikon for the reasons described above. However, I fully expect cyclical changes in equipment and don't plan to keep swapping.

1, what do you shoot with?
Nikon D40
2, why did you choose that system?
Cost
3, what is that current system lacking for you?
Focus points, bracketing
4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
Nikon D300s

1, what do you shoot with?

Canon 1 Series body's.

2, why did you choose that system?

I had a Canon film system and just moved to the 10D when that came out.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?

Now the 200 f2 IS has been introduced nothing.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

I would stay with Canon, I have looked at changing to Nikon but decided against it.

1, what do you shoot with?
Nikon D3, D200.
50mm f/1.4
35mm f/2
24-70 f/2.8

Regularly borrow 300mm f/2.8 and 80-200 f/2.8

2, why did you choose that system?

Meeting business related requirements. I was a Canon user before investing in Nikon.
Canon didn't and still don't offer someone like me much choice.
The feature splitting is a major hindrance as I shoot both action and static subjects.
Plus it's nice not having to master any fiddly or mythical 'technique' to achieve a sharp frame wide open at f/2, f/1.8 and f/1.4.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
My back up body possibly needs replacing, the AF operation while effective is a little clunky and the LCD is quite soft.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

I'd have shot Nikon from the beginning.

1. Olympus

2. Originally for small size (E-410) with affordable decent zoom kit lens (300mm equiv of 35mm)

3. Decent tracking auto focus. The E-3 is better but still frustrates the hell out of me.

4. Hard one. Don't want to lose the Zuiko glass but much prefer Nikon bodies. Would probably go for Nikon especially as my 50-200 SWD lens has just failed for the second time in 13 months

1, what do you shoot with?
Nikon D300s
2, why did you choose that system?
It was a tough choice. Looks maybe
3, what is that current system lacking for you?
I dont know, just starting
4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
Only just started
Maybe swap the 70-300mmf5.6 for a 70-200f2.8

1 - Canon (voted)
2 - Intial reviews and confirmed once handled.
3 - Glass and a external flash?
4 - Probs Canon again, menus feel good for me and the whole camera feels right. although this is my first DSLR so only had shop experience with other manufacturers.

1, what do you shoot with?
Pentax

2, why did you choose that system?
A few years back when I switched to digital, Pentax were the only company offering what I needed in a DSLR system. There was no other choice for my requirements.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?
Choice of going to FF body/lenses would be good but for what I do crop sensor is just fine.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?
Possibly Nikon.

1, what do you shoot with?

For digital Olympus E3 (for film Nikon, Canon, Hasselblad, Olympus, Bronica)

2, why did you choose that system?

Saw it at Focus Exhibition tried it, saw some images from it fell in love with it and bought it.

3, what is that current system lacking for you?

A decent selection of Prime lens.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

Olympus

1.Nikon D70 & D70s
18-70mm
SB800 Flash
Sigma: 12-24mm
30mm F1.4
70-100mm
105mm F2.8 Macro

2. Natural progression from earlier nikon systems allowing me to use older lenses until i
could afford to upgrade. Sigma lenses as oppsed to nikon on cost bases.

3. Macro lighting system and a fast.F2.8, 400mm Lens

1 Canon 1DMKIII (after starting with 5D then 40D) In my film days Olympus OM4
2 I asked a pro friend for advice as I wanted full frame. As I had no glass and I wanted FF he advised Canon so got a 5D
3 I'd like an EF 10-22 (Canon only do that in EF-S which doesn't fit my body)
4 Canon

1, what do you shoot with? Nikon D700

2, why did you choose that system? Had a Nikon film camera before that which I got a very good deal on when I bought it. Also, the D70 which I bought seemed to have the edge on the Canon 300D at the time, plus I like a bigger camera.

3, what is that current system lacking for you? In-body image stabilisation. My Panansonic compact is stabilised and it's superb. I have a VR lens and it's ace, but Nikon do very few full frame stabilised lens.

4, if you could start over again what would you go for? Whatever camera I think is best at the time. I'm not a brand snob.

1, what do you shoot with?

Canon 1D Pro Body Series

2, why did you choose that system?

Because the person that got me into photography, had a Canon and at the time, recommended the 10D

3, what is that current system lacking for you?

Nothing other than a 500mm lens (which I can't afford so that's why it's lacking!)

4, if you could start over again what would you go for?

Probably the same!

Additional to the above, if your friends all use a particular brand, I do believe in sticking with that brand, if you need to borrow or test and they have that particular "thing", then at least you don't have to hire it!!!!!

Regards,
Carl.

cheers for any information.
