I'm not sure this thread is such a good idea, but hey whats the worst that can happen :|

Reading through the forum i get the feeling that a majority of people don't have a very high opinion of Nikon.

Why is this?

ditto [S4]i love nikon[/S4]

Shane I've been around here for a year and a bit and although a large proportion of those here are Canon users there are plenty of enlightened people like us who prefer the "darkside" - Most of the anti-Nikon jibes are just banter as far as I can see - It would be a boring world (& forum) if everyone used the same cameras imho ... Paul ;)

I love Nikon too.

Okay maybe i have been reading the wrong threads, paranoia setting in.

Mods, can we have a Poll of who uses what?

I'm another Nikon user.

To be honest there's not a lot of difference between the two. They are systems for the same task and they are going to have minor differences.

I think the biggest draw back of the Nikon system is that the professional glass is very expensive. Whereas Canon L (although not cheap) is still more or less within the budget of your average enthusiast.

Having said that, the Nikon glass that is within your average Jo's price range is good. Possibly a little bit better than Canon's budget lenses. You just can't go around waving white lenses with a Nikon. :p

As a devout Canonian, there's nothing wrong with Nikon at all. Criticise the user, not the camera, in particular cases:D

People hate Nikon for the same reason people hate Macs and why PS3 users hate Xbox's and why Mario fans hate Sonic and so on. I'm a Canon user but I love the D3 and the D200 is a great camera. People just love to make a joke. Don't take it personally. Least its not an Olympus ;)

Well I wouldn't be without my Nikon (or my Canon, or my Pentax or my Olympus).

:nikon:

:canon:

:olympus:

I have used both and can find fault with both along with many strong points too.

All of the below are my own opinions so please don't slag me off if you don't (and most probably won't) agree.

For me Nikon has better cheap glass, the lens and body build seems better (up to D200/300 level) and I think macro images are often a little sharper. But the main difference IMO is that Nikon seems to take other glass better than Canon (sigma and tamron lenses). Nikon Cameras are a little easier to use IMO.

Canon I feel is better with tele lenses and has a slight edge in detail here. The settings seem much more sensitive and for an inexperienced user you are more likely to either under or overexpose an image, I find with canon you have to be bang on and with Nikon you have a little more room for error (probably due to images underexposing slightly by default with Nikon). Nikon I feel has slightly truer colours straight from the camera though.

Canons high end glass is a bit cheaper and I feel the IS works better than the Nikon's VR (this may have changed since it was a year or two since I tried Nikons).

Noise - Nikon gets slated here but I found both cameras to be quite similar I have to admit.

So what do I use? Canon but I’m going back to Nikon for my macro work, I just enjoyed using it more and IMO it had a little edge, as simple as that.

At the end of the day cameras perform as well as the user, but if one needs to be picky then that’s what I found.

Like I said these are my opinions, I don't recommend one over the other, both are great, but the grass is often greener.

Not sure I should admit to this but I have a Canon DSLR a Nikon point and shoot and old Pentax SLR, not mention an old Russian camera I've hardly ever used. So not sure whether this alienates me from the various communities or means I just can't make my mind up:help:

Just so greedy Mark :p At least you can't get offended when someone slates one of them lol.

I don't think Nikon gets slated, or vice versa. As has been previously mentioned there's plenty of Nikon vs. Canon banter, but that's all it is, good hearted banter.

I guess it's like supporting Man Utd over Man City, to liken it to football. Although I don't like either team ;).

nah that's just religion, although...:naughty:

No contest, NIKON wins hands down:nikon::exit:

Like many others I think the Nikon lenses are fantastic especially the ED glass Pro series lenses. However I'm sure the top end Cannon glass is equally good- most differences will be found in the consumer end cameras & lenses. The only reason I went the Nikon digital route was because I already had various Nikon SLR's & lenses so it made no sense to jump ship- though I didn't buy Nikon DLR's I went the Fuji S2 Pro and S5 Pro route since I think the CCD's are better for what I want to do. Best of both worlds then- Nikon Lenses & Fuji bodies!

Having said all that I now own a Canon G9 compact- which at the moment I seem to be using more than the DSLR's!

i think they are fine only one niggle they spelt it wrong....

CANON

 THATS BETTER

md:thumbs:

Guess I just got lucky and started out on Nikon 20 years ago. I've never regretted it and couldn't use anything else long term now (though I am very partial to the Chinese Seagull copy of the Rollieflex for 6x4). Cannon just isn't Nikon. :D

I thought Canons were either artillery pieces or a range of Cookers/Gasfires :naughty:

I have a Nikon D70 (I blame Chuckles for introducing me to the range!) and I wouldn't change.

Also have a Fuji F47fd digital compact which is absolutely fantastic!

This has turned out quite a funny thread :D

Very true mattyh..;)

Their washing machines are really nice..:D

PS: Shout up I can't hear you..

What I find interesting is that many of you are using more than one make for various things. My DSLR is Olympus E1 which pipped the Nikon D80 at the post purely down to the way it felt in my hands. For sure though the D80 is better specced and I knew this, but did not think this would be so important. ( had OMs years ago so might be influential ) I must admit though the images I see on here from the canon 5D amaze me, I did hold one of them but I had to factor in the cost!

My other camera is a G7 and hats off to Canon for such an excellent point and shoot.

Put another way I saw Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin play a blinding version of "In my time of Dying" on a $50 guitar proving its the person that creates the magic and not so much the gear!

I am no expert but the OP has not gone wrong buying into Nikon. If it feels right it will be right. Good luck fellah.

John.

dont think there is any thing wrong with nikon, 80% of the cameras at our caamera club are nikon. I have started with canon and will stick with them as I am very pleased with it. but it could have been the other way round

I satarted off with a Fuji S9500, which i broke soon after so replaced it with a 9600, my friend had upgraded to a Nikon D40x and i was amazed at the quality of pics he was getting, i knew then the fuji just wasnt going to cut it anymore and took the plunge into SLR.

I read alot about canons/Nikons/Pentax, my dad used a pentax 35mm slr when i was a kid but the noise above iso400 (k100/k10) put me off a little, i settled With my D80 as Nikons seem to give you a more realistic end image where as Canons seem to be a little artificial, almost like they have already been photoshopped.

Although if someone offered me a 5d i would bite their arm off!

Im probably going to stick with Nikon, next on my list is a D3X
